OT: What to do with my kitties?
I've got a problem and I need some suggestions from you all. I know many of your are ardent cat lovers, so please do not judge me for this, okay?
I've got two outdoor kitties. They are basically barn cats. I've had them for years. They live outdoors and they help me keep the field mice out of my house. Their names are Holly and Pansy.
Well, I'm travelling a LOT these days. And when I travel, I have to find someone to come out and look after my cats. If I'm only going to be gone for a few days, I just set out extra food and water for them.
But lately, I've been going to stay at our lake house for 1-2 weeks at a time. That's too long to leave the cats unattended. We have possums and racoons and wild feral cats galore out here. They sometimes come up on the porch and eat the cats' food. Also, sometimes a cat will get locked up in the garage when I leave. (I always set an extra water bowl and some food out in the garage, just in case this happens.)
So, up until this summer, my mom has always been the one I've asked to come out and check on the cats every few days. Make sure they still have food and water, check the garage, etc. But my mom is 84 now and she just doesn't want to do it anymore. And I don't have anyone else I can ask.
I can travel with my pups, but not with my cats. I need to re-home these cats! (Sounds better to say 're-home' than 'get rid of'.) But I don't know how to do it. They have been spayed. But they're not exactly pet cats. I don't want to take them to the animal shelter. I don't want them to be put to sleep after 30 days. But I don't know of another alternative.
I'm leaving for Hilltop next Friday and I'll be gone for 2 whole weeks. I need to do something before then. Any suggestions?

We do have a group here called O'Malley's Alley Cats, but their mission is to trap, spay/neuter, and release feral cats. I'm not sure they would or could help me with my barn cats. I tried to look them up on-line, but there's no phone number on their website. I guess I'll try calling my vet's office Tuesday morning and see if they know of a group that helps to adopt cats.
Pansy and Holly have given me years of good service as mousers and have asked for very little in return. I just hate to take them to a shelter. But it's not right to ask them to fend for themselves for 2 weeks. They are used to being fed everyday.
Do you think they could be adopted from a shelter, even though they are older cats? They have been spayed, which is a plus. But they are not house cats, like your little Juliette. I just don't know what to do.
