I'll be the second to wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day. I'm down here in Whittier, CA at my mom's. First time I've come down to celebrate in about 18 years. Of course, it's a little selfish. My older son is at college at UCI (first year), and he came over for the weekend too, so I get to see him for Mother's Day too. But my mom hasn't been doing too well and we lost my mother-in-law last year, so I feel the need to spend more time with her. Brought her flowers (bearded irises and my first rose) from my garden. If you need to know how to travel with flowers on a plane, I've got it all figured out now. Brought lots of movies to watch with her. Played a game of scrabble with her, her favorite game. Got to go out to a movie with my son (our MD tradition). Out to dinner, and brunch tomorrow, then fly home to enjoy dinner and the evening with my husband and younger son.
Hope you all have a wonderful day!
Hugs.

Jan,
Scrabble is the only game my Mom will play with us kids. She is pretty good at it too. Beats me most of the time.
Happy Mothers Day.
Hugs,
Trish

Hi Carla and my OFF family to come:
I'm sure I'll talk on Skype with my mom later; sent her a card (my brother said she got it; he said my sister got her the same card) and an Olive Garden gift card. Mom is in the Chicago area and I'm here in La., so it'll just be a video phone call. Oh well; even if I was in Michigan, I don't think I'd be driving back to see her, not with the price of gas over $4 a gal. up there (we're at $3.79 down here).
Otherwise, it's just work down here and then home to Juliette, who greeted me with meows and kitty kisses ... no other mother's day gift from my little furry girl. She did sit up three times for her treats today, a record. She is so much fun to come home to.
I work again later today, then Monday and Tuesday, too. I just have Wednesday off this week.
The White Sox actually won a game ... amazing, huh? I credit my not wearing a Sox t-shirt for their success ... I wore my Williamsburg t-shirt instead. Maybe I should continue that trend, huh?
Well, that's all for today. Have a good day and Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there (and the pet moms too).

Hi Carla,
I'm up late after a busy day- I visited my Mom in rehab and then went to a college graduation and party. My nephew graduated from the same college that I graduated from 35 years ago. Good for him! He still needs to attend grad school (as I did) but the biggest chunk of college is over! It's no small achievement, and even harder to finish these days than when I did it.
My Mom is still in the rehab hospital...her favorite phrase now is "I don't remember- it must not be important.". I am trying to gather up all of the important pieces for her medical application for Medicaid. I'm totally overwhelmed by all of this. I did find my Dad's Discharge Papers from Worls War II. He never talked much about his service... I knew bad things happened but the papers told me what he did in the service... he drove heavy trucks. They also told me where he was- France, Belgium and Germany- and at the Battle of Normandy. The only war story I ever heard him tell was of a child that a truck backed into, crushing his head- now I wonder if my Dad was driving it. He was definitely a casualty of that war psychologically... he had lots of depression and PTSD. He died at the age of 51, just before I graduated from college.
I have the Power of Attorney for my Mom. I don't know if I'm ready for all that is coming. I'm going back to visit my Mom today- I bought a little flag for her hospital room that says "Welcome to my Pad!" with a little frog on the lilly pad. I've started writing the day of the week and date on her marker board. Today I'm going to try to talk her into getting into the wheelchair to go outside. She has not been outside since her fall on Easter Sunday- two weeks ago, yes? It feels like yesterday and a year ago at the same time.
Oh- the next chapter in my Grand dog saga... Sookie ate a couple of rocks a day or two ago. She threw one up but the other one stayed put, causing digestive bleeding and diarrhea. So she had surgery to remove a rock yesterday. I told my daughter that she needed to pay for the bulk of the surgery- I would help a little, but a dog can be expensive. She has no problem giving her last penny to save that dog.
Happy Mother's Day friends.
Julia

Oh, Julia! One time my little rat terrier (she was just a puppy then) swallowed a BIG fish hook! We took her to the vet and he xrayed her stomach and there it was. It was almost as big as her little stomach. He had to do surgery to remove it, and you're right! It is expensive! But we had to do it. No way she could have passed it on her own.
Good luck with your mom and her medicaid. My mom is 82 and thankfully, she's still living on her own and driving. But my day is coming, I know.
My FIL was in WWII. He was a POW in Germany. He never would talk much about it either, except to tell how they almost starved to death. The prisoners got 1 loaf of dark bread a day, and that was it. He said they learned to slice and toast that dark sour bread on a shovel over an open fire in order to eat it. It was too sour and heavy to eat otherwise. It would lay like a rock in their stomachs. Incredible, huh?
Happy Mother's Day to you!

Did your Dad know that he was elegible for 100% VA disabilty compensation since he was a former POW? Did he know that your Mom was elegible for special treatment too. Are they still alive? Most WWII POW's had NO idea what their government could or would do for them....this is so important and such a secret. While working at the VA I saw with my heart and eyes how little was known. So gratedul I got to be a "Paula Revere" ringing the bells to bring knowledge, compensation benefits to veterans and their families, even after the veterans deaths.
Oh Vickie, let me know, I need to know. Monica

Hey, Monica, you are so sweet. But, no, my father-in-law passed away several years ago. And my mother-in-law died back in the 1970's. I don't think they ever took any VA benefits, but I really don't know. I'll ask my husband if he knows.
My husband is also a Vietnam vet, like yours. He went to school on the GI bill. And we bought our farm here using the Texas Vet Loan program. It's good to have knowledge of the programs and benefits available to vets.
(BTW, my husband was a medic in the Army, but he was sent to Korea during the Vietnam war, a fact I have always been so grateful for! He has not suffered the after effects of war the way your sweet husband has, but he had plenty of friends who were either killed or suffered from PTSD as a result of their time over there.)
I hope you are having a good Mother's Day today!

Julia:
My dad would never talk about his war experiences, either, except we knew he was in the Army in Italy and North Africa ... he was drafted, of course. We didn't know much about it until one day my oldest brother found his medals and some photos in the attic, and my dad told him some things about it, but nothing much. But later, when my oldest brother Ed's draft number was 4 for the Vietnam War, my dad told him, "If I had the money, I'd send you to Canada so you wouldn't have to go to war." He obviously had such strong feelings against it.
Ed wound up going into the National Guard, but he had to search in the Chicago area for a unit (they were in high demand back then) and because of his college degree and high IQ, they made him an MP. He served his six years and got out of there. My brother Gary's draft number was something like 400.
BTW, Dad got his hip replacement surgery done at the VA hospital. He figured the war had something to do with his bad hips, Uncle Sam owed him new ones. He did have shrapnel in his legs and probably hips courtesy of the Nazis and Italians.
