Way OT: ingredient search
Hi y'all! I have a rather strange request. I am seriously thinking about entering one of my recipes in the Pillsbury Bake-Off for 2012. Problem is, I'm worried that a couple of my ingredients are too regional. They might not be available in CA, or VT, or MI! I never had a way to find out before, but now, thanks to all of you, I do.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble, the next time you go to the store, could you please glance at the canned or frozen veggie section and see if they have the following:
1. Crowder peas or black eyed peas. (I prefer the frozen, but canned might work.)
2. Turnip greens, either frozen or canned.
That's it. Everything else should be available just about anywhere.
Recipe has to be entered no later than April 18th, so I still have about a month to fine-tune it.
Oh. What is it? It's a southern twist on chicken pot pie. Haven't thought up a name yet. But it sure is good! I made some today, only without the cornbread topping. DId you know crowder peas have 9 gr of protein per serving? Who knew?
Thanks for your help y'all! I don't want to submit a recipe that is too regional and get bumped out of the competition because of it.

Oh, that would be great, Judy! Yes, by all means, please check in Ohio. And Michigan, too.
You know, the recipes have to be original, which this one is. I made it up. But they also have to be just a little unique. My category this time is called "Dinner Made Easy". Everyone loves chicken pot pie, but this is a decidedly different one. My family loves it.
However, strange or not-easily-found ingredients will knock you out of the competition, no matter how delicious they are. Just because I can walk into my Krogers and buy turnip greens and crowder peas, doesn't mean everyone across the country can.
Appreciate the help, pal!

Vickie,
Here in eastern Massachusetts I can buy canned black eyed peas and turnip greens in some of the local super markets. Are there other names for black eyed peas or another type of canned beans that might suit the recipe? This may make it more flexible.
How about sharing your recipe? I love pot pie.
Best,

Hi Judy! Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it. Maybe I'll make it to the finalists this time, who knows?
Crowder peas are similar to black-eyed peas, and really I think they could be used interchangeably with not much difference in the taste. But if you don't mind, next time you go to the store, see if they have crowders? I'll probably have to go with black eyed peas since I think they might be more available nation-wide.
That's good to know about the turnip greens!
I'll be happy to share the recipe. I just want to finish tweaking it a bit. You know, I never use measuring spoons unless I'm baking. I just shake and pour at will. I have to get all my seasonings measured out exactly for the contest. I'm not sure how "a few shots of hot sauce" will translate into teaspoons yet!
One of these days, I'm going to win this thing!
