What's happening to our world?
Hi Everyone
It's been a while since I dropped in. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in about all the disasters that have happened so far this year. I know that this side of the world didn't have a very good January and February what with floods, cyclones and earthquakes in Christchurch New Zealand.
Then to watch the news and see the devastation in Japan with another earthquake; 8.9 on the richter scale! And then to have it followed by a tsunami!
What is the world coming to. I am at the stage now where I just don't even want to watch any current affairs or news programmes. I know it might seem a strange comment but while my heart goes out to all those who are suffering I am over the visual impact of these disasters and the constant television coverage. I feel I have been overloaded with pictures. I donate willingly and am very saddened by what is happening.
Is anyone else feeling like they have been overexposed?
Jules

Jules, Unfortunately most of the news of interest to the media is of the bad disaster time. Like you we need to know of it but over and over and over. At least this is important world impact news. . . Then there is the Charlie Sheen stuff that goes on and on and on. Enough of that already. . .

Hi Judy, We're fine. We're in Seattle at our son's taking furniture from here south to our daughter in Chehalis about 90 miles south of here. I didn't hear about the quake and tsunami until about 6am Pacific time. I actually slept pretty soundly last night and didn't have the tv on until this morning. I've been watching the expected high water surge along the Washington coast and they haven't seen much of anything like they thought it might be. Still could happen but unlikely which is good. Doesn't make good news coverage but it is GOOD. I am wondering about Maui Karen who live on Maui in a 3rd floor condo right on Maalea Harbor. Also Cindy P in Newport, OR, Julia in Manteca, CA, and Jan S in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Thanks for asking.

There is a sociological term "narcotization effect" that refers to when audiences become numb and fail to act no matter how huge a disaster is due to the media providing massive amounts of coverage. We become numb because we see the same thing over and over again and it doesn't even register with us with the same impact anymore.
