I'm in the right place
A word or two about the sleeve (VSG) and why I opted for it. At 65, I was worried about the long-term implications of the RNY. I wanted to have the best shot for a future where I could eat (and drink) as normal a diet as possible and I wanted to insure that if I had future GI issues, they could use my remaining plumbing to deal with them. As I understood things, the VSG offered the best chance for these long-term outcomes - for me, everyone is different.
I needed to lost 175 lbs., and I had co-morbities of diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure. I was also a reasonably fit fat guy, even at 425 lbs., I played lots of golf and did tons of yard work; so I knew exercise would not present a huge hurdle for me. Well, I'm 3mo. +1 week post VSG, I've lost 80 lbs. (including 24 pre-op) and I no longer have diabetes, sleep apnea or high blood pressure. I eat a low/no sugar, low-fat, high protein diet and I currently walk 2.5 mi. every single day, plus I go to the gym for stength training 3 days a week. It's very hard work - and I love it more every day. My wife is a dietitian, but as we've always said, "she's not MY dietitian" and she loved me as much fat as she will love me not-fat. (She's a retired college prof.) Her wise counsel was and is a key part of my success. But the final decision was mine and, for me, the VSG was the way to go. I wish you all the success in the world, no matter what decision you come to.
