I have been searching for people who have been living with RNY and other WLS for greater than 5 years.
I am 54 with a BMI of 41ish and need to lose 110 lbs.  I am a little concerned about the eating & vitamin regiem required after RNY surgery. I have not committed to any specific surgery as yet, but I am leaning towards RNY but I am a little scared about the malabsorbtion. My surgeon does, lap band with plication (folds outer edge of stomach in like a hot dog bun, then sews it closed so it is like getting a VGS without cutting away the stomach), VGS or RNY. DS is not an option.

I see that some of you have been living with RNY for over 5 years.

I would appreciate any replies that you feel will be of assistance.

I am over four years post-RNY.  Life is pretty normal for me.  I eat low fat, no sugar as much as possible, and small portions.  I take meds for psychiatric and allergy reasons, and am fine. 

I ahd my RNY open, and recuperated fine.  I did develop a hernia, which had to be repaired. 

What can I tell you?

Thank you Laureen & Trish for the welcome.  I like the tone of what I read on this forum and plan to stick around.
I have a couple of appts with the psychologist before she will make her recommednation to the surgeon. She wants to make sure that I have all my 'ducks in a row' to support post-op success, regardless of the procedure I choose. Things like OA meetings (going tonight after a decades long absence), personal trainer or exercise regime established, food & emotion diaries started, and so forth. Based on my personality testing, I have a higher level of long term failure. I start out strong and even get to goal weight, then can't seem to keep myself there long term. This has been my lifelong pattern, so the findings come as no surprise to me. What I did not know is the huge role Ghrelin plays in my hunger and storage of fat. My gastrointestinal system no longer works in the same way as someone who has never been MO. This was actually helpful new, as I think I had been feeling like such a failure and had lost any motivation to go on another eating program to lose weight.

About my non-weight related life: I am married, have a daughter and a 2.5 yo grandson. I have 2 big dogs and a dear 14 yo siamese cat. I live in San Diego. I work part time at a botanical garden doing clerical work. I love to garden and I am happiest when playing in the dirt.

Can you tell me about your daily eating habits, what, when, how much, supplements. What you never eat that you did before surgery. If you were an emotional eater? If yes, how do you now deal with those feelings?

This will be very helpful to me.

I will be 5 years out from open RNY next month.  I can eat everything I ate before surgery in smaller quantity and modified with substitutions to make it low carb, low fat and all around healthier.  I use Miracle Noodles and Carba-Nada Egg Noodles to replace pasta.  I use Carb Crunchers to substitute for bread.  I limit my fruits and stick with basically veggies that are low on the glycemic index and high fiber.  I don't do rice or potatoes (they are triggers for me). I started off over 400# and have found that I will always be carb sensitive and its best for me to stay under 1,000 calories.  Everyone is different and thats what works for me.  I will always have to obey the 5/30 rule for drinking and eating,  Which is no liquids closer than 5 minutes before a meal and no liquids for at least 30 minutes after a meal,  There are days that I can treat myself to something special, but its right back on track at the next meal. I take my supplements twice a day and will continue to.

Some days your the dog and some days your the hydrant.
