Greetings oh wise ones!
I just found this site a few days ago and already like it much better than the Main Forum. I will be having my final pre-op doctors appointment on the 28th and at that point will schedule my RNY.
I'm really excited!!! These days pre-op I'm trying to be conscious of my unproductive habits and thought patterns as well as trrying to establish new patterns-like drinking all day! Anyway my question is about following my progress post-surgery. I've had a love/ hate relationship with the scale. I'm really anxious to know how I'm doing but can tend to get really thrown off if the results aren't what I expect.
However measuring doesn't seem to give adequate feedback-I'm not as thrilled about losing an inch as I am about losing a pound. Anyway, I'm rambling. Could I hear from you all please?
                                                         Thanks,Luciessa

A lot of folks follow the scales on a weekly basis; however, I never weighed.  Even when I go to the doctor, I don't look at the scales.  I didn't measure myself either.  I suppose the anxiety of failed diets left me not ever wanting to see if the scale or the measuring tape moved.  Do what causes you the least stress.  If you weigh daily or weekly and you don't lose, you may become disheartened.  From the way I have experienced this procedure is that I would lose steadily for months and then stall.  Because I only weighed at the docs, I never experienced the drama of the stalls.

I agree that you should follow your doctor's orders to a t.  Some doctors allow soft food sooner than others.  My doctor kept me on liquids for a long, long time.  Then, I went on full liquids for what seemed like weeks.  From full liquids I moved to soft and then solids.  Every doctor is different and every patient is different too.  I had surgery a few years back and had to have a revision because of an ulcer but to this day I cannot eat sweets or fatty foods.  I do and within ten minutes, I throw them up.  That's a good thing for me.  I also cannot eat white bread or hamburgers.  You will learn as you go.  Our pouches rule our lives, as you will learn.  My most important advice is don't try new foods away from home because you could either vomit it up or have massive diarrhea.
Good luck and hang around here and you will learn more than any doctor could ever tell you about this process.

Welcome Luciessa!  I am a newbie, too.  Been here about a week.  This is a wonderful group!  So caring and supportive of one another.  I feel very "at home" here.

I don't I think I'm going to weigh myself at home.  I get very hung up on the scale and how much it's moving (or not moving!), and that can set you back mentally.  I think I'm going to put my scale away for the first few months at least, and just weigh at the doctor's office.

Anyway, I'd rather judge my progress by my clothes.  I have everything in my closet from a size 3X to a size 14.  I'm looking forward to moving down the size scale!

Good luck with your appointment!  Keep posting!

Hello , New Sister,

Our cup run's over with new family members.

I didn't have a scale , didn't buy one, just weighed at the Doc's.

I did use the tape. Once a month I would measure and keep track of the changes. I did that for about a year. Most of the time I found changes. As I got further out the changes slowed.

However you keep track of your weight lose is good. Just keep walking and dancing , sipping and moving forward . This journey is going to take you for a wild ride. A ride I'm so very pleased we all found.

Hello Luciessa,

Welcome to our corner of the OH universe, we are a wonderfully supportive group with lots of longterm post-WLSrs and happy to share our journey with others. . .

It is good to be conscious of your unproductive habits as that will help you further down the road.  Good habits to start is a food log, so that you get in the habit of keeping track of what you eat and drink.  As for the scale and measuring, let me explain that often enough on this journey the scale is not our friend, but measurements show that things are happening when the scale does not and I don't mean you should take them more often than once a month, but it was suggested to me from some WLS folks who had their surgeries before me to take measurements and a pictures once a month, as it was proof positive when things seemed to be going awry.  I had to have my scale hidden from me at a certain point because I was obsessed with it and it was getting to my pysche.  Jeannie's assessment of using your clothing as a gage works for some and there are many ways to handle this.

The early stages of this journey are full of ups and downs, but most of us find that we feel better than we have in years and the Wow moments are fun, but eventually they stop and reality sets in and that is when the real work begins.  So strap on your seatbelt and enjoy the ride and we will be here to enjoy it with you.

Again, welcome and best wishes as you travel this road.

Laureen

My Mantra is that I do not determine my success by the number hanging in my closet, nor will I let the scale determine that success either. . .  It is through trial and error I will continue to grow and succeed. . .  Laureen

I do get on the scale every day - but mostly it's just because I can't believe I weigh what I weigh after being over 200 pounds the last 10 years! If you can stay away from numbers and measurements being the measure of your success - how your clothes look and feel and how productive and active you are in your life now should be your "success". Remember - we got all caught up in the numbers game before and determined based on what the scale said and what size we wore that we were "worthless". The same thing will still apply - just because we are a certain smaller size and the scale says a certain # doesn't mean we're now successful - now that size doesn't hinder us from life - take advantage and get out there and live it! Just because I wear a 12 and not a 6 doesn't mean I can't make a difference in my or my surrounding group of folks' lives! Someday I may get to a 6, but I'm not going to waste what time I have left on earth obsessing over it. This spring I'm going to concentrate on stuffing as much physical activity as I can into beautifying my surroundings and loving and ministering to those around me.

Who knows - I might even plant some peonies, LOL!

Who said "Bloom where you are planted?" They were on to something.......

I did not own a scale till recently, and my surgery was four years ago.  I also failed to measure myself, and wish I had, because there were stalls, and during those times, my clothes got looser.

Listen to your doctor's guidance about weight loss.  They use percentage of weight at start.  I have yet to reach goal, due to old habits creeping in, so it is good that you are changing behavior patterns now.

Hope your surgery is soon.

Hugs,
Trish
