Pain Relief?????
Hi everyone....I have not been here in a very long time, but now I am facing a dilemma and know that you folks are the ones that can help! After my RNY surgery, my surgeon advised that I should forever avoid NSID pain relievers (to hard on the stomach), and due to its reputation for causing liver issues I have always avoided Tylenol. Well here we are 4 years after surgery and I am having very painful hip problems. My primary care doctor gave me pain medicine....I reminded him of my RNY, he stated it would be fine. When I got the precription filled the clerk advised me that it always needs to be taken with food as it is very rough on the stomach (thanks doc!). So here I am...does anyone here deal with arthritis pain issues and what (if anything) do you take! I am at wits end!
Welcome back!
Many of us deal with arthritis pain. I thought that once I lost my weight all would be good, but heredity and all the extra weight for so many years has done its damage. I have severe arthritis from my neck to my toes.
My WLS surgeon is adamant about no NSAIDS. Forever. I asked if I could take them with Prilosec or Prevacid and he said absolutely not. The only thing he'll agree to for pain other than Tylenol which is useless for me, is Ultram or Tramadol. Non-addicting, non-steroidal. It's better than nothing, but doesn't help like the NSAIDS used to. I know all WLS surgeons aren't as strongly opposed to NSAIDS as mine is. But I decided when I had the surgery that I would listen to what I was told.
I'm not much for planned exercise, but I do find that if I keep active it's better. As long as I keep the joints moving in my daily activities, I can deal with it. I don't see much other choice. The Ultram helps a bit, but I don't like the fuzzy feeling I get from it. I take it as seldom as possible.
I hope you find something that works for you and is acceptable to your WLS surgeon.

I have pain everyday from Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. It is the worst in my hips, knees, hands, and lower back
The only pain relief I get is from Vicodin. Yes, it is a narcotic. I am very careful and only take it when I absolutely have too. I am allergic to so many medications it is hard to find anything that works.
I was on Flexaril and that helped so much for the muscle pain. My allergies to that medication got so bad I can't take that anymore . We tried several others....more allergies. I am now on Valium once a day at night.....it does help with the muscle pain.
I hate taking narcotics but I don't have a choice as the pain gets just too bad.
I will not take NSAIDS...my surgeon showed me pictures of why to not take them.....oh my!
I hope you find something to work for you. Cortisone shots helped me with hip pain for a long time . You can only have so many of them and then they can't give them to you anymore.
I wish you the very best......hugs....connie d

I too have osteoarthritis (spine, knees, feet) and fibro, and the only thing that helps is vicodin. I'm on a couple of antidepressants to help with the sleep issues with the fibro and with the depression that comes with, well, my life in general. I have had a knee replacement on my right knee and a revision, and still am in so much pain it's not funny. I keep myself to two vicodin a day, unless I overdo it activity wise (walking, standing, traveling, etc.) and get in so much pain.
Once, after the first knee surgery left me with patellar tendinitis, it was recommended I take celebrex (also an NSAID, but supposedly less harmful). I called my bariatric doc first; he said I could take it if I also took a PPI (proton pump inhibitor, like prilosec or prevacid ... I was already on Nexium twice a day because I still had reflux even after an RNY). I tried it for a month; it was very expensive even with the copay and didn't really work anyway, so I quit taking it after a month.
Ice, heat, vicodin, massage, the chiropractor, the pain clinic, hot tubs, the pool (when it's open) ... these are all things that work at times and don't work other times. It'**** and miss. Arthritis is a progressive disease. Even after you lose the weight, its toll has already been taken.
