hmmmm....I too use a free version of AVG, but mine doesn't ever expire...
But anyway about not being able to uninstall the old one... make sure you have it turned off or disabled before you try to uninstall, sometimes it's a problem if the files are in use.... If that doesn't work, try booting your machine in 'safe mode' and then uninstalling...
