HI there I am curious to know if anyone had the sleeve surgery?
Hi there
I will be 50 next month and I was curious who had the gastric sleeve and was the recovery as expected or was there things that were not expected? I am to have the gastric sleeve and wondering if baractric surgery is the best thing for me. However, I have not been able to lose any amount of significant weight in over 10 years
I look forward to your reply and suggestions.

Hi,
Welcome to the OFF board. I don't know if anyone here has had the gastric sleeve, but no matter which kind of surgery you get, you've come to the best place for general support. I believe most of us have had RNY, some may have had lap-band.
Did your surgeon's office explain all the different surgery options? If you don't know why they have recommended the gastric sleeve, I would ask. It's always good to know as much as possible. Many of us have had surgery in our 60's and have done very well.
Please tell us a little about yourself, so we can get to know you.
We have a daily thread where we often share a little about our
daily lives. In addition to that, there is a daily thread for those who like to share what they're eating & support each other that way.
Hope to hear more from you so we can get to know you.

thanks for the kind words. I am quite impressed with how close and supportive you are to each other here. I am a clerk at a high school and I feel like me becoming 50 next month will include all types of wonderful experiences and adventures. I have 3 grown boys who are totally against any sugery and convinced i can do it on my own just stop over eating (Sigh) of course they have no real weight problem and at there age I could easily yo-yo up and down, with no thought of health consequence. Now things are different and although the surgery is pushed by my doctor not for vanity but for health reasons i am very slowly trying to lose what I can till that day. Thank you again for being so welcoming.
hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful weekend,
Janet

Welcome Janet. Stick around, ask questions, get lots of support in whatever decision you make. No matter what surgery or perhaps no surgery you choose we all have one thing in common. That is that through the years we have all gained and lost many hundreds of pounds over and over. That alone is enough to form a great, understanding bond. I started visiting this forum a year before I ultimately had Laparoscopic RNY surgery. That was almost 7 years ago.

Hi! I am 52 (oh my, I'll be 53 in 2 short months, where has the time gone???)... and I had the sleeve surgery in May, 2008. I have done extremely well with the sleeve and have not had any problems with or after the surgery. I have a pretty extensive health history (two time cancer survivor) and because of the type of cancer I had my oncologist would not/could not approve of the RNY or lapband. My surgeon was Dr. Robert Burger in Flagstaff, Az and he was absolutely wonderful as was his entire staff.
As for my weight loss, it has been excellent! I have levelled off and not budged for about 3 months but I am very comfortable with my stahl. I have gone from a size 28 (a very tight 28) jeans to a 12 and from a 26 top to anything from a medium to XL.
The surgery was a breeze for me, spent a couple of nights in the hospital (mostly because I was from out of town and with my health history they wanted a little more monitoring), had a speedy recovery (approximately 1 1/2 - 2 weeks at the most for me) and then got on with my life.
As those before me have said, the choice of surgery is strictly up to you and your health care providers. We are all different but one thing I can say without a doubt is that the compassion, support, care, warmth and friendship that you will find on this forum is amazing. We're like a big family, here for each other and encouraging one another with every step of this journey.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi, Janet! I had the sleeve on Oct. 4th, so still kind of new with it, but I am doing just fine! I was in the hospital two nights, it would have been just one, but drinking and eating was uncomfortable, so they kept me an extra night just to make sure I would be able to eat when I got home. My recovery was pretty much uneventful. I went back to work at 2 weeks, and I teach martial arts for a living, so I wasn't very active at first, but now at a little over a month, I am working out with my class.
I still eat very little and it is hard to get all the fluids in, but I do what I can. I am still on pureed and very soft foods now, but should move to soft food later this week. I have one or two Premier Protein drinks with 30g of protein (from Costo) daily. I feel great and the weight loss has been steady. By the way, I will be 56 on Thursday!
Best of luck to you on whatever decision you make!

Dearest Janet....Please put your mind at rest....I had considered and wanted the RNY for over 5 years....finally had money to self pay and discovered the VSG.....I knew it was right for me....I'll be 5 months out on the 28 of this month and I can smell victory & my goal!!!
There are some rough moments, nausea, pain of course, etc....but so worth it....I was basicly a text book case...
Only you can decide what is right for you!!! Keep researching and asking....I first schedule a RNY when I was at my surgeons office on May 4th...but had a health issue come up and the surgeon had suggested VSG...but, I wasn't interested....then since I had to put off my surgery 4 weeks....I had time to research his recomendation....you don't have any idea how glad I was for this chance.....I changed my mind after reading everything I could find.....
Lovin' my sleeve!!!

Lovin' my sleeve!!!
Hi! I just turned 52 in June and had the sleeve done in August. I LOVE MY SLEEVE!!!!! This is the first time I've checked this board out as I've only discovered it tonight. I've done great with my sleeve, no problems post-op at all. Very fast recovery, and very uneventful just as everyone hopes for. I can eat anything I've tried so far. I haven't had an insulin shot since 2 days post-op. Off all my blood pressure meds. I feel very alive!!!!! I have lost a total of 66lbs including my pre-op loss. Best wishes for you and whatever surgery you decide on, I have many friends who've also had surgery and we are all losing together and loving life!
