ANOTHER UPDATE ON MY BROTHER
(Karen C here on Laureen's computer!) I'm confusing even myself! I've been in very rural PA/DE the past few days doing genealogy sightseeing and staying with an 88 yr old Quaker lady. Man on man did I have preconceived and very inaccurate expectations there. When I have a chance to digest it all I will post more.
Today I head back home arriving in Washington about 11pm. I've been gone 12 days. Such a variety of experiences: meeting friends, making friends, visiting both Philadelphia and Washington, DC for the first time. Then the Amish country and exploring my family's Quaker background.
Sunday I sat in Londongrove Meeting where my ancestors worshipped in the 1800s. There is an oak tree out front called a "Penn Oak"; one of I believe 3 that were there when William Penn visited in the mid 1700s.
The Quaker meeting was so interesting. I am going to visit a meeting 50 miles from where I live. I like the idea that Quakers do not have to follow the exact same set of beliefs. This particular meeting was silent meditation for one hour (tough for me!) and then an hour of "First Day School" which was a group led disussion. Sorry, didn't mean to get going as I need to "get going."
Julia, "Google" Sally Rickerman. Oh, my! A cross between my mom at 90 (Sally is 88) and Kathy Bates in the movie MISERY!!! My first thought as I entered her ancient stone cottage in the very rural and wooded area on the PA/DE border was: I wish Julia was here and this may not be a good idea! I learned so much from this exceptionally intelligent woman. Not exactly the "Quaker Family" experience that I expected but much more in many ways.
Pat, part of the trip has been on my own, but lots of planned visits with a shirt tail relative (or one that thinks she is. Another story), friends from all over, historic places, a Mennonite B and B in Washington, DC (I highly recommend: safe, clean, great food, 4 miles from the White House and they have recently raised the fee to $40.00 per day including all taxes!), genealogy research, Gettysburg, Mount Vernon, Valley Forge. . . .Makes me tired just reading about it. Time to go home and rest up but what a great experience!
Judy, Glad to hear your brother is doing well. I've been totally out of touch for a few days. Julia, sending positive vibes your way.
