Weight loss surgery and severe depression?

Saw my shrinks PA again today.  She told me that it can take up to 3 years for your body to readjust after surgery.  She said it does all kinds of things with your hormones and vitamin and minerals which can cause a whole host of symptoms.  I take all of my supplements religiously.  My labs were fine except my Vit. D level was low normal so I added an extra one of those each day.  We discussed my memory problems which have been worsening in the past year.  I attributed it all to stress.  She said if my Vit. B levels are out of whack that can cause those symptoms and can become permanent if not addressed.  She said depression after surgery is typical for most patients sometime between the first and second year out.  She put me on a prescription vitamin called Deplin and I picked it up today after using the samples she gave me.  $65.00 for a one month supply.  My insurances won't pay for it.  It does seem to be helping though.  It is supposed to help the Zoloft work better.  Meanwhile, I fell getting out of bed about a week or so ago and cracked my head on the corner of my nightstand.  No bump, just very painful to the touch still to the area.  No bruising,  it just throbs off and on throughout the day so anyway, now it's back to my PCP for more lab work, an MRI, and a neurology consult.  When it rains, it pours.  My short term disability insurance is running out in a few weeks.  My FMLA ends on the 20th and I'm still not released for work.  Anyway, that's why I haven't been posting much.  Right now life just seems to suck and I don't want to keep boring everyone with my trials and tribulations.

Sybul, Thanks for updating us. Hang in there. Sounds like you're on the right track to gaining your health back. I find for me that keeping my B12 level up helps my mental state.Don't let yourself pull back from people. Now is the time that you need all of  your support people more than ever. When I am depressed I just want to go to bed, pull the covers over my head, and stay there. It doesn't fix things and in the long run just extends the process. You are not boring us. You're doing your best to find solutions to your health issues. We care.

Hopefully the doctors will find out what's wrong with you and get you up and going soon.
Depression...I'm lucky there but depression is hard to deal with. I believe meds help when you find the right combination.

In the mean time if you can or are able to walk please do so. Exercise helps. You don't have to do 3 miles...just walk and look at the beauty around you. Take deep breaths and maybe meditate. I'm thinking good thoughts and prayers for you Sybul. Hang in there. Some day the light is just going to shine brighter for you. At this time you have a lot on your plate. Be kind to yourself and I know this is hard but put yourself first and not feel guilty about it. You are important and you deserve to be healthy and happy. If your health has improved since the surgery, concentrate on that aspect. Hugs Debbie

Sybul...first of all you are not boring us!! You are one of us and we are here to help and support each other no matter what. That is just the kind of group we are.

Depression is not a fun place to be...I know I have dealt with it most all my life. I am glad you are seeing your doctor and working on ways to help you through this difficult time.

Glad you are getting a MRI to check your head injury. Could be nothing but always best to check it out anyway.

I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers as always...I know you have been struggling.

Please feel free to post anytime....we do care!!

Hugs...connie d

Hang in there. Depression is tough. I have dealt with it, too, on and off. See if you can get the doc to give you samples. Or call the drug company to see if you can get some help with the bill (they do that). Have you been checked for fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgics have something called fibro fog, which happens a lot because of sleep deprivation (we think we sleep but we don't get deep restful sleep).

Depression after surgery is interesting. I know I had an iron deficiency a year out; one of the symptoms of that was irritability (so I wasn't just *****y!).

Take care of yourself.
