Yes, and you can even count coffee and tea!

Dr. Grandjean: No. The belief that drinking water is essential to maintaining hydration status is a common misperception – for example, many frequent travelers have asked me how they can stay hydrated when they don’t always have easy access to water. In fact, this premise in part stimulated an interest among my colleagues at The Center for Human Nutrition and me to study whether there is a difference in maintaining hydration status based on the types of beverages consumed.1

For our study, healthy volunteers participated in two separate trials, which differed only in the types of beverages consumed. During one trial, one-third of the total fluid volume consumed was plain water and two-thirds was a mix of juice, coffee and soft drinks. We used this mix because it closely represents what most Americans consume. During the other trial, the subjects consumed the same amount of fluid, but the beverage mix included only juice, coffee and soft drinks – no drinking water. Upon analyzing the results, we found no differences in markers of hydration, which suggested that although the body needs water, it doesn’t need drinking water per se as long as adequate amounts of other beverages are consumed.

Many people believe that plain drinking water is more hydrating than other beverages. Is this true?

Protein drinks counts, coffee counts (just drink the same amount of water after drinking coffee, anyway that's what I do)

There is so much wrong information out there. Caffeine is not good for early post ops. If you drink coffee for the first year try decaf...

Liquid is liquid it all counts along with Popsicles and jello.

Rules change the further out you are but we should never drink with meals ever. Don't break that rule.

Total intake is 64 oz of liquid. I get at least a total of 120 oz of water a day. Your skin will thank you for it. I never go anywhere without my bottle of water. It's a good habit to get into forever.

I "water load" in the morning, I'm 3.5 years out. I'm bad, I drink regular coffee in the morning. I need my wake up coffee and drink 16 oz of coffee on my drive into work. Right now I have my 16 oz of water at my side typing this. Drink water and it helps with hunger but not head hunger! LOL

My nutritionist said, that anything fluid, with the exception of caffienated products, is can be considered towards my total intake.  I was told, no caffiene for the first 6 weeks, after that, I had to drink equal amounts of water for the caffiene I take in. . .  I switch to decaf coffee once I get in the office, drink roughly 24 oz of the stuff before I get here in the morning and perhaps a little more on the weekends, but lots of water.  Also, told not carbonated products for the first year post-op, I don't miss them, as I never did like artifically sweetened sodas, drank so little of the stuff that when I did I had the real thing. . .  however, there are some that say even caffienated products are includable, however, I opt with following that they are not and make up the difference, the side benefit of drinking enough fluids, is beautiful skin and I get complimented on my complexion all the time, so it might just be right (lol)

My Mantra is that I do not determine my success by the number hanging in my closet, nor will I let the scale determine that success either. . .  It is through trial and error I will continue to grow and succeed. . .  Laureen
