No, it's not okay!! You should eat three small meals and one snack everyday. She is not following the nutritional information she was surely given at her follow=up appts.
This is not a starvation plan -- it's important to get the correct nutrients to keep your body healthy. That means, protein first, then small amounts of vegetables and fruit.
64 oz. of liquids every single day -- 1/2 from plain water.
Be careful not to listen to everything some people say on the boards....they don't always have the correct information.

Lilee,
For some people, post-operatively, they have little or no appetite, but that is not the idea of this surgery, it is about portion and right choices being learned over a period of time, so that the further away you get from surgery, hopefully, you have retrained yourself when it comes to eating right and in the amounts that will sustain life, but not put back pounds. That being said, your surgeon will likely give you a plan of how much to eat and how often, generally, the rules vary from surgeon to surgeon. I had a cousin who had no appetite, even 2 years post-op, she ate by the clock and had something approximately every 2-1/2 to 3 hours. She lost 150 lbs. and went below her goal weight. I on the other hand had my hunger return at about 2 months post-op, I was seriously disappointed, but I've learned how to manage it, by first being sure I am hungry, you will hear the term head hunger, which is where our mind tells us we need to eat, mostly we are bored or just looking for comfort, or possibly emotional eating, so before giving into the temptation to eat, I have to be sure it is time to eat.
This process varies for everyone, but starving oneself is not what this is about and quite frankly, you have to feed your body to lose weight, it's what and how much to feed it that we need to relearn and our RNY makes us unable to consume large quantities or sugarladen and greasy foods.
So a feeding schedule according to your surgeons directions is what should be adhered to.
