Hello, fellow old farts! I am an old-time DSer myself: I was under fifty when I had the surgery but I am over 50 now, so is it okay if I hang out here with you all?

I need to get back into the swing of things. In the 13 months after my surgery I lost 170 lbs and actually had to stuff myself with carbs for the following 8 months to keep from losing more than I wanted! I maintained easily for the first few years, then started having to be more careful, then started not being careful enough--and now I am a good 20 lbs over where I want to be.

Whoops! Time to get back on the bandwagon! I came across a study on Medscape lately about long-term weight maintenance. The people who did best were those with personal coaches (duh!)but folks who were consistent participants in on-line weight-loss communities did almost that well (and this is much cheaper!) So I've been looking around for a forum that is active but not too busy, that has folks with whom I have some things in common, and that allows a mix of weight-loss and off-topic threads.

So, I kind of liked this forum, and I hope I'll fit in here. Is okay?

About me--well, my avatar says a lot about me...so,other than that: I am in the low 50's, in a long-term relationship, and childless by choice. I have a full-time job in the helping professions. I try to keep a low profile when it comes to my on-line presence, having at one time attracted an Internet stalker of my very own--an experience I do not recommend! Y'all can call me Tink!

Hello Tink. Hang around all you want.  Lots of good folks on this board.  There is a daily thread that you probably already found.  Just a "what I did yesterday, what I am doing today" thread.

We all have issues with weight regain (almost all).  We all have to find our own way to attack it.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

Welcome Tink and keep on posting.

sigh...mindful eating, that is what we all have to do in the long run. Honeymoon period gone and it's mindful eating and exercise for me to maintain my weight.
Nice to meet ya! Hugs Debbie

Mindful eating--does that mean like, eating only when you are hungry and making good choices even then?  I'm screwed! Well, maybe I'll get better with practice. The DS was so dang forgiving in the early years that I got spoiled!

Yepper Tink, that is what mindful eating is, being aware of what you put in your mouth but eating what you desire only portion control. No guilt on your food choices because it's your choice.

Now for me I choose protein first, then fresh veggies and fruits. I believe what ever surgery you have...well at first it is a piece of cake. Later on it's not no matter what WLS you choose.
No magic bullet and now we have to "bite the bullet".

You are not screwed, you are just in the same boat as all of us. No food should make us feel "bad", no number on the scale should dictate to us if we have been "bad".

Heck, I have been at this weight loss game most of my life, just like all of you. I'm not perfect and I do treat myself, just not everyday. Learning to push that food away when it stops tasting fantastic to me, has been hard but I'm doing it.

I want to get back into my size 6 pants, I'm a size 8/10 so I'm getting there. Yep, I had regain last year on my cruise and then came back to Christmas celebrations. I will always struggle.

My goal for this year is interesting, at support group I'm going to propose to those 2 plus years out if they want to hire my Eating Coach for 125.00 for 6 weeks of learning from Kristi the Eating Coach. She is great and I connect with her. She will gear it to WLS because she knows about WLS and has done talks for us before. I love the way she thinks.

Good luck Tink, I know you can get those pounds off. It's not a race, this is for lifetime...and you are still a success, remember how far you have come, how much healthier you are now.
PM me if you want to talk more. Hugs Debbie

Hi Tink and welcome!

Ahhhhh, you sound like one of us old timers. Honeymoon is over, the "please don't let me lose anymore" period, now the "how in the HELL do I keep this off" period.

You'll feel right at home here, so pull up a chair, get yourself a cuppa whatever, and join in. The more the merrier!

Susan

Hi Tink:

I'm in my mid-50s and six years out, and I too have regained 20 pounds in the past two years ... inability to exercise much because of two knee replacement surgeries on the same knee (I say failed because I still have pain, my doc says it's fine, oh well), plus eating the wrong stuff, plus a five-month layoff ... yeah, I have lots of excuses.

Single, only furry children (just one cat now), I've moved around a lot for work and am now employed again and in Louisiana. Glad to have you join us. We're a good group, very friendly.
