Hi Everyone.  I am new to this Forum.  Had a quick look at some of your threads and they read like one big family.  I just want to ask one question please.  Did any of you feel that your age was a disadvantage with RNY surgery?  I am 55 and the issue was raised by a friend (raised very nicely).  Your views, opinions, tips would be most welcome.  Thanks. Jules

Hi Jules!

Yes, we are one big family, although we're a lot "smaller" than we once were. Welcome to the gang!

I was 51 when I had my surgery and I know there are folks here who were older than that. In my opinion, the only thing that was bad about doing this at 51 was that I didn't do it when I was 31!  No time like the present.

It's wonderful to finally be at a point in my life when I can enjoy and appreciate the body and health I have now. Hopefully, I'll live a lot longer now.

Susan

Hi Jules

Welcome to our little family.

I was 56, and have had no regrets except, like Susan, that I didn't have surgery sooner.  We have a number of ladies here who were in their mid-60's, and I think they feel the same way.

It's good that your friend raised the age question nicely.  I had a few who asked me right out if I was out of my mind.  I'm over 4 years out from surgery, 100 lbs lighter, and I'd do it again tomorrow, at my present age of 60.

Again, welcome.

Candy

Hi Jules -- another country heard from on the OFF forum!!

I had RNY in 2007 at age 68 1/2.  I lost well the first year, but since have regained some of my weight (less than 20 lbs) mostly from not following the rules.  My own fault.  I got along beautifully after surgery, no pain to speak of and back to work in a little over 2 wks.  I would do this surgery again w/o even thinking about it.  I wish some of the other surgeries would have been available -- the sleeve and the Duodenal Switch, but medicare would only approve the RNY.  My doc says I can still lose even after 3 yrs so I am back on the program.  I am no longer diabetic or have high blood pressure and have lots of energy even at age 71.  Like everyone else I wish I could have done it sooner....guess it's all in God's plan.

I've had hip and foot issues this past year that have caused me to not be able to exercise, so that's why some of the regain.

I don't feel my age had any adverse effect on my success.....I still feel like a "winner" even tho' I have 50 lbs yet to lose.....I'm healthy now!

Best wishes,
Pat R.

Jules, I met several people from Australia on a tour to Italy in October. What a fun group! Welcome to our little forum. I'd like to encourage you to take a look of profiles for people on this forum. I was 55 in 2005 when I had RNY. I weighed 377 lbs and am just 5'3". I literally got my life back. It is nothing to decide lightly as it is serious surgery. But that being said I was "killing myself softly" as the song goes. . I wanted to live to see grandchildren which I have. They light up my life. Everyone here probably gets tired of hearing about them!

I will be 62 next year and feel 20 yrs younger than I did before having surgery. I lost close to 200 lbs. I regained about 25 through not doing what I knew I should be doing. I'm back on track and it is slowly coming off.

For the most part my friends and family were so supportive. By the time I made the decision I knew it was the right decision for me and I really didn't give a rotten apple what anyone else thought! Stick around. I  think you'll like us.

I had my surgery at 49 and lost 180 pounds; took me three years, and have regained 20 but mostly because I've been unable to exercise due to problems with my knee. This is a good group, you'll love it here.

I agree with the others, the only complaint is not doing the surgery earlier, but back then, the surgery wasn't perfected.

Good luck to you; I've always wanted to go to Australia, but don't know if I could handle the long plane ride anymore with my bad back and knees.

Welcome Jules,

I was 59 when I had surgery 4 years ago. In my opinion, we are more compliant with the guidelines at our 'mature' age because we want to live the remaining years in better health.

No regrets other than waiting so long to make this wonderful decision.

Jules, what's a number??? It means nothing. So if WLS is what YOU want it's there for you.
Just be sure to go to a bariatric support group meetings in your area for life. Why? Because everyone needs support.

I love this forum. It's the most kindest and gentlest forum in OH I believe. Why? Because we indeed are older and more mellow. Maybe we don't lose weight as fast as the younger ones but it will come off....in time. Took me almost 2 years to get to my goal size.

Some of us think a little different but indeed we all support each other. Good luck in what ever you decide...and keep posting we are here for you. Hugs Debbie

I'm 61 and having surgery in about 2 weeks.  I wanted a sleeve but insurance wouldn't approve it.  So RNY for me.  My surgeon said some of his older clients were his healthest clients.
