Hip replacement surgery?
Hi Tony,
I know nothing about hip replacement but have quite a few relatives and friends who have had it. I had both knees replaced in 2002 when I weighed in at 340 lbs. The first 3 weeks were pretty painful and difficult with physical therapy. Also very necessary for the desired result. I'm sure had I had the replacements in 2007 after losing 170 lbs my recovery would have been faster.
I would think they your hip replacement recovery will be better having taken off so much weight first. Surgery is never fun and nothing to be taken lightly, but it should go well. Wonderful pain control helps so much. Don't by a martyr, take the pills when it's time so that the pain doesn't control you.
Seems like most people I know who had hips replaced including an 80 yr old aunt, recovered quicker than I did from the knee replacements. Best wishes.

Best wishes.

Done! Your Ticker:
I had a total hip replacement 6 months after my RNY and I must admit that these 2 surgeries gave me back my life! Before my surgeries I was walking only with a cane and barely functioning. I wanted my life back and was willing to do anything to get it. I was off work for 8 weeks (it could have been 4 but I wasn't able to drive). Follow your doctor's suggestions; and please let me know if you have any questions. I'll be very happy to discuss with you by email or phone.
Congrats on your weight loss and the new YOU!!

Glad to hear you surgery went so well. I am hoping for the same outcome. I have heard such a wide range of opinions on hip replacement surgery from it is nothhing to it is very painful and tough to get over. It is probably somewhere in the middle. My RNY saved my life, I had so many things going wrong with my health I felt like I was going to keel over at any minute. Now I am pretty healthy and once I get through th hip replacement I should be able to move a lot better.
Thanks for the support!
You've already made huge progress in regaining your health which is GREAT! Even before I had my hip replacement I kept in my mind my goals:
1) be able to hike again
2) be able to boogie board again
3) be able to sit on the floor and play with my grandchildren
Each of these goals was attainable and helped me get through any pain I would endure. I'm so happy for you and know that you'll soon be able to join me in your personal goals and be rid of the pain you're feeling.
Please let me know if I can help you in any way. I know exactly what you're experiencing. (When are you having your hip replacement?)
