calcium and heart trouble

Did anyone see the medical report on CBS news last evening about taking calcium and having heart issues?????  We WLS patients all take copious amounts of calcium citrate --  I've had to cut back to 750 mg./day because my bloodwork came back with too much calcium.  There was also some information about bone loss....I had a bone density scan again this year and I am in the "normal" range for age 71....in fact mine had improved by 1% over last year.  The technician said I didn't need to get another test for 2 yrs.

This was an interesting report.  I do know the practice that I go to has recently upped the amount of calcium to be taken.

Comments?

Hi Pat. I read about it on CNN. I don't take calcium because of kidney issues. My calcium is still high. I guess you would have to call the office to see what to do.

we saw the report last nite- it worries me only in the fact that i haven't had my labs drawn in awhile(too long)--i do my citrical d petites religiously tho--
my bone density was done years ago and was good then....

i try to get my calcium from foods tho too

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I saw it too.  I wonder if those of us who have the RNY need to worry due to the malabsorption thing going on.  I'm getting my annual labs drawn on Monday so we'll see how they are doing.

I'm confused. Didn't see the report. Heart issues caused by too little calcium or too much?

Heart issues from taking calcium supplements at all.....obviously older women post menopasal (sp) have calcium deficiency and are told to take calcium supplements to help with bone loss.  The report indicated those taking any calcium supplements were at risk for heart problems.  The doctor recommended getting calcium from food only.  That's a real issue for us WLS people.....I do try to drink at least 8 oz. of milk (fat free) daily.   I will report what my surgeon's office has to say when I go for my 3 yr check up on 8/19.

There is a discussion on this study on the main board. It seems that in this study they did not add vitamin D to the calcium. They acknowledged that vitamin D makes a difference because of it's heart PROTECTING benefits.
