July Reading Thread: What have you been/did you read lately?

Hi everyone,

It's time for another reading thread, another month gone by already!

Last month I read Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.  What a project that was!  I'd set reading five classics this year as a goal.  I think it was one of the biggest books I've ever read.  It was like a soap opera--sometimes I would be totally drawn in and couldn't put the book down.  Other times I was so bored I just wanted to scream!  I'm very happy I got through it all and overall, I can see why it's called one of the greatest novels ever.

So what have you been reading?

I'm just about finished with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Very good. We saw the movie, which is Swedish with subtitles and it was great too. Can't wait to read the other two in the series.

I got that book at the library, Girl w/the Dragon Tattoo, and after two chapters, I quit.   Just couldn't get into it.  Sorry.

I read "The hour I first believed" by Wally Lamb, outstanding book but 730 some pages long.... it's related to the Columbine shootings.

I'm just finishing "Where are the Children" by Mary Higgins Clark, it's a small paperback == I started it last nite and have one chapter to go.....I'm a fast reader.

I have read all three in the series, and loved them all.  Couldn't put them down.  The movie is out on dvd tomorrow and I will be getting it.

I just finished "The Soloist" by Steve Lopez for the book group I joined.  I probably would never have picked it up if it hadn't been on the list, but it was a wonderful true story.  Insightful and inspiring.  I think it was recently made into a movie, but books are my first love, always....

Yes, I remember when the movie came out!  That was a book Ithought I'd like to get to and then I "forgot".  Thanks for bringing it back into my head, Candy.  I love to read too.  I never go anywhere without a book.  I'd feel naked without one.

Morning Cassie,

The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo is the first in a trilogy...and yes they are mysteries of a sort.
  the 3 books are:

  1) The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo
  2) The Girl who Played with Fire
  3) The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest

I just finished reading the last of the three...it really was a great set.  the author, sadly, died after finishing the 3rd book..I guess he began a 4th and his wife or girlfriend still has that unfinished piece.  He was a great author..

Haven't decided what to read next..but, I truly need to find another book.  I'm sort of going thru withdrawal with out a book to read.

I'm reading, Innocent, by Scott Turow.  This book was just published and it begins twenty years after Presumed Innocent ended in the 80's.  I reread Presumed Innocent before getting the new book.
Scott Turow is a lawyer and writes in the John Grisham genre, but he is a much better writer.  I can get through a John Grisham novel in a very short period of time, but I need to take more time with Turow's books, which are few and far between - sadly, because his writing is much more in depth.  The characters are better developed.
I am halfway through Innocent and it hasn't disappointed me.  I have to wait years for a Turow novel, but it is always worth it.
