French Toast Casserole

George asked for the recipe.  It certainly isn't carb/WLS food.  I had 3 bites that tasted quite good, but something I don't prepare unless I have company.

French Toast Casserole

French Toast Ingredients
1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces) OR 3/4 of the loaf of Texas Toast
6 large eggs
1 cup half-and-half
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Dash salt

Directions
Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whis****il blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F and make the Praline Topping.

Praline Topping Ingredients
2 sticks butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well.

Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

I melted the butter in the topping and poured the topping over the bread.  I don't think that's the way it is intended, but it was easier and tasted yummy.

Some people might not support my WLS decision.
Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.

sounds yummo- we got lazy awhile back and started making our (stove top) french toast in a similar way--just tear up the bread and stir into the egg/milk/nutmeg/cinnamon/vanilla mixture--let it stand abit if time then cook on the stove--we do use sf syrup and it is NOT carb friendly but i love it!!!!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I love french toast...I'm going to try this with a couple of changes.....I'm going to use only 3 eggs and add egg whites plus I'm going to add some raisins and cranberries to the french toast ingred and I'm going to skip the praline topping.

OMG when I read the ingredients in the praline topping I felt like I was gaining 5 lbs.....LOL.

Thanks for the idea....I'm going to bake this for Saturday breakfast.  I love the smell of baking in the house.  yum yum

If I was making it just for myself and DH I would use egg beaters and Splenda brown sugar.  That would help a little bit.  But since I can't eat my weight in food anymore, 2-3 bites isn't going to hurt.  Besides, the pecans add protein. LOL  I thought I had raisins and was going to add those too, but I was out.
