OT: Fear of Flying

LOL....yep I'm only human.....

I have stepped out of my box or comfort zone in many ways.....professionally, and personally BUT this has had me frozen in my tracks and I have missed out on many opportunities.  I don't want to be limited by this fear although for the most part I can get anywhere I need to go or want to go via car, train, boat......BUT it takes so stinking long.

Anyhow.....for some reason with me the more I flew the worse I got......I think because I kept saying statistically speaking the odds are working against me the more often I fly.  BUT ENOUGH on that...I'm trying to think this out logically and clearly so that maybe I can give serious consideration about taking a 3 hr flight.........remember Gilligan's 3 hr tour...............

Thanks for the encouragement!!!!

Yes, I remember Gilligans three hour tour, but also, what an adventure!  Think fun!  Try hypnosis, or call the airlines and see what they have to offer.  Couldn't hurt.
It is what it is.

Ruth,

Thanks so much for sharing this fear. It gave me much to think about. Much of my life has been spent letting the flow of life decide my course because I am so afraid of doing something wrong or less than perfect.

I'm going to get my "cheese" book out and reread it. I've made progress but I still have much to learn in this life. Life is a series of learning opportunities. Sometimes I don't recognize these learning opportunities. Instead I see them as roadblocks to my happiness.

In reality, I need to bust through those roadblocks in some way instead of letting them keep me from a new experience. It's also a good reminder that even those who appear invincible probably have some fear that is impeding his or her progress through life.

Ruth,

I too had a fear of flying. Sometimes I have to take a .25 xanax to get through...just enough to take the edge off. Last time I flew, I didn't tell hubby how afraid I was but he knew by how I held on tightly to his hand. I don't take the window seat, that helps me.

I also try to take a good "smut book" to read on the plane, go somewhere else in my mind. LOL

I prefer to take the car but on long trips a plane ride is a must.

You know I did the zip line(s) on my cruise over Thanksgiving...that was terrifing to me!! Ya know that plane ride back to Grand Rapids wasn't so bad after that!! LOL

I suggest you go on a zip line...okay, I'm so LOL right now. I do feel your pain...yes drugs sometimes are good to get over the anxiety factor.

Too funny Debbie, a zip line is on my bucket list, as well as parasailing.  They do parasailing on Grand Traverse Bay, and I'm starting to talk myself into doing it this summer.  Hubby wants to do it too, and he for sure won't chicken out.  He parachuted out of a perfectly good plane, but I chickened out and didn't even take the training.  I was all talk back then, but when it came right down to it, why jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

Oh yeah, my friend the Colonel who flew the Worthogs said why jump out of a perfectly good plane? I agree with him and you.

Zip line was fun but I screamed every time I had to take off, had to do that 9 times. Hubby just laughed at me and he looked relaxed every single time.

My girlfriend was a Hot air balloon pilot and was always trying to get me to go up with her. Uah...I stayed on the ground. Maybe I will put that on my bucket list...giggles!

You'll love zip-lining.... and para-sailing is awesome.  I parasailed on my 62nd birthday... and zip-lined this February.  I've hot-air ballooned over the red rocks of Sedona.  I'd do it all again...but I really want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

Bucket lists are great!!  You get to keep your power..

I would be more apt to doing a zip line before stepping on a plane......LOL

Here's the really weird part.  I really want to take a Hot Air Balloon ride and would love to do a helicopter ride over NYC.  Strange huh!

Yep, strange Ruth.  A couple of my friends have done the hot air balloon ride thing and absolutely loved floating up there.  They said you can hear the dogs barking below so clearly.  Now that scares me.  Don't think I'd do that, ever.  now the helicopter ride over NYC, NO WAY.  Too many high rise buildings to hit.  When we go to Alaska next year I'm gearing up to do the helicopter over the glaciers.  I didn't do it last time we were there, partly because of fear and the other part was because I'd have had to tell the pilot how much I weighed.  Don't know if I'll succeed in talking myself into it, but I've got another year...

I have wanted to do an Alaskan cruise for about 15 years but haven't because I won't fly to Seattle.  If I can conquer this fear or somehow comes to better terms with it a trip to the west coast LA and then up to Alaska would be one of the first things I'd do.
