Do you have your vitamin levels checked thru a bloodtest? I have every 4 months.
If you do, here is my question (I'm a lapbander).
Are we supposed to exceed the parameters set for vitamins in the report? Or are we taking extra vitamins - since we are using up more say - just to get within the parameters?
My vitamin levels are all over the place now - some high - some low and I dont know quite what to do.
Thanks,
Katherine
You said some are high and some are low. Which ones?
I am not an expert but it is my understanding that as a lap bander you should not have mal absorption issues. You should be able to keep your levels at appropriate levels without taking massive amounts of vitamins. I would think you are to aim for the parameters as shown on the lab report and not need to keep anything on the high side.
Karen is right there are a couple of people here that are way more knowledgeable than the rest of us and I am sure they will respond.
A too high (changing multivitamin)
B 1 and 6 too high - (stopping b complex)
Calcium too high - reducing citrate
C too low - getting double in my new multi
D (always a problem) I'm back on prescription - it's 31 not too bad but will
always have to watch like most of USA with/without wls
Zinc too low - taking 25 more
Nothing too dramatic. Thanks for your help.

So I'm correcting (hopefully) by increasing and decreasing back to the suggested parameters on the lab report.

Hi Mary
I'm a Kaiser patient (also RNY) so their protocol may be different from what your docs tell you but this is what I have been doing for a year now:
B12 is orally only...strickly sublingal (under the tongue). I was told because B12 doesn't break down fast enough to get into our system thru the pouch and needs to be absorbed thru the big vein under the tongue.
I was told 'time release' is not ok as the pill again doesn't stay in the pouch long enough to break down. Most time released are meant to break down slowly over 8-12 hours...and most pills/food are thru our pouch in 2 hours.
As I have found doctors' protocol all over the map...I would advise calling your doc's office or nutritionist and asking them directly.

PS I totally! understand the glasses issue...I just bought new ones..smaller than the last! LOL

...and when someone breaks our wings, we simply continue to fly...on a broomstick.
We are flexible.

I understand now about the time release not staying in your pouch and not absorbing it. I might just have to keep them on hand just in case I run out.
I take the sublingal liquid. It is also has all the B's in it but most of it is vitamin B12.
Oh these vitamins and getting them right is driving me nuts...lol At lest so far everything else is ok,
I did have my blood checked about 2 months ago and everything came back in the normal range. I probably will have it checked in May again.
Thanks everyone
