OFF Bookworms: What have you been/are you reading?

I am kind of slow reader because I generally read my books in bed, my magazines and newspapers in the living room. And I'm really behind in my magazines (I'm still reading January's Time and Sports Illustrated, that's how behind I am).

I finished reading "Devil's Brood" by Sharon Kay Penman, about Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine and their warring children ... boy, did they have a dysfunctional family! It was the third book of a trilogy, but I got it through the Press book sale for really cheap, so I read it first, not realizing it was the third book.

So then I had to buy the other two books ... so now I'm reading "When Christ and his Saints Slept." This is about Empress Maude and King Stephen, and their fight for control over England after Henry I dies leaving no male heir because his heir dies when the White Ship sinks. Maude is his daugher and he names her his heir, but of course no one wants a woman to rule. So Stephen, his nephew, seizes the throne and a civil war break out. If you've read Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth," this era is dealt with in there. It's fascinating. She's a very good writer and I think she's pretty thorough in her research. Now I have to go back and watch "Becket" and "The Lion in Winter" because those are the movies that deal with Henry II. And anyway, they're great movies.

I really love historical fiction. I've read a lot of Phillippa Gregory's books dealing with Tudor history, and got hooked on that period. I'd love to go to England sometime and see some of these sites.

Hi, Eileen - Love Pillars by Ken Follett (sequel:  World Without End.  Same cathedral town
200 years later).

Have you tried Carolly Erickson:  Secret Diary of Josephine
(I think that's the name - Napoleon's wife).  Also same author - Last Wife of Henry VIII.
She's done books about Marie Antoinette, Catherine the Great.   Take a look under her name.
She is an historian and also writes what she calls "historical entertainment".  Just
fascinating.

I'm reading the book Molokai by Alan Brennert.  It is a fictional story based on the actual leprosy colony on Moloka'i island in Hawaii.  I really have enjoyed it and am nearly through with it.   I'm also reading Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies - it is the third book I've read on this subject!

I just finished over the weekend a Johnathan Sparks book, At First Sight.  I enjoyed it.  Rather predictable, but entertaining.  Don't know what I will pick up next.  We are getting a new puppy on Saturday so am knitting a few sweaters for her, so my books will probably have to wait a few days until I get the sweaters done.

Thanks for starting the thread about books and reading!

Recently read Michael J. Fox's latest, Always Looking Up:  The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist.

The book was divided into sections.  For the most part it was pretty interesting.  The one section I could not get into was Politics, so I skipped the last 25 pages of that section.

James Patterson's Worst Case was pretty good.  If you are a Patterson fan, you won't be disappointed.  This one is with the NYC widowed detective with 10 kids.

Now I am reading Sue Grafton's U is for Undertow.
