I am having trouble with taste everything taste like it is loaded with sugar. Too the point that it is sickening. I am having trouble drinking my protein. Ginger ale, cranberry juice, apple juice all taste really sweet. Has anyone had a problem with the taste of things being sweet? The only thing I can drink is chicken broth. I also feel weak in the morning until around noon. Please any  suggestions will be appreciated.

Dear Clara,
You are going through the "ugh...everything tastes too sweet for me stage"

Try watering down protein drinks...and are you really drinking ginger ale?

Cranberry juice and apple juice probably have sugar in them too, add water.
Stick with the chicken broth. Try some tea with added protein in them.

Maybe some decaf coffee with protein. I do half and half...half Atkins shake with coffee. It's like hot chocolate.

Clara,

Oh how I remember this stage and it has been almost  5 years! My nose and sense of smell were so hyper sensitive. Everything smelled so strong. I about lived on chicken broth for 2-3 weeks. Sugar free stuff tasted too sweet to me also.

I didn't start even using protein drinks for about 3 weeks. Your body has been through a lot and it just takes time. I figured I had enough stored in me to keep me alive for months. Not trying to make light of this, but just make sure you get fluids in. It can be broth, ice chips, sugar free popsicles. I remember thin tomato soup tasting good early on.

I made my own popsicles out of very diluted apple juice and froze them. That gave me liquid and didn't seem as sweet.

Treat yourself kindly. It is confusing and seems so difficult at first. It will get better! This is a great place to come to for support. I'm glad that you were comfortable doing that.  PS When I really started dropping the weight fast. . . I felt like I smelled "funky." I would ask my husband if I smelled! I  think it was the ketosis from losing so fast but I really did think I smelled. He said I didn't. Don't know if we just being nice or what but I felt "Musty kind of funky" That was all that I could think of to describe it.

They say not to stock up too much until after surgery because stuff will taste different. It sure did to me! Things that I liked before surgery I no longer liked. The good news is that some of that will return with time and in the meanwhile it sure makes it easier to stick with your program!!!  Congratulations it will be a marvelous year for you!

Hi, you've got such good advice from everyone.  Just wanted to send you (((hugs))) and tell you you're not alone!  sometimes I still have issues with taste.

As others have said, don't worry too much about protein right now.  You want to be more concerned with getting in fluids.  Another thing since you can tolerate chicken broth, try mixing in unflavored protein mix.  You can also mix the unflavored protein into other fluids too, even water.

I think feeling weak is normal too.  You've had a big surgery, major changes done to your body and so it's recovering and in shock.  You're probably going to feel exhausted for a while, don't worry it's normal.

Definitely take care of you and give in to your body's demands for sleep and/or inactivity.  Now is the time to pamper yourself and let others care for you.  :)

Thanks ever so much for the suggestions. Yes I also feel that I "smell" a different oder that I don't understand. I do tomato soup easily and chicken broth and also cottage cheese. I guess that I will try to get in my protein the best that I can. I go back to my DR. next week for my first checkup. Thanks so much.

first of all CONGRATS!!!!! and i wish you the best on your journey to a new you!!! its a wild ride so hang on!!! ;-)

ginger ale is carbonated isn't it? to me that would be a huge NO-NO!!!! it will stretch your new pouch and you don't want that do you?

as for the sweet tasting foods and drinks...try diluting them and see how it goes for you.

weakness could be from lack of protein or water. i used to keep my water and i still do yet right next to my bed so i can sip during the night. the protein i used was ANYWHEY and you can use it in baking without a taste to it.

good luck!!!

Thanks Judy, You are right about the ginger ale. I looked back on the list and can't find it. It was a good thing as I tried to drink it and could not. I am going to try to get in more water as I know that I need water( I'm having trouble with this). I can't drink anything excep****er right now. I am going to try chopped ice in it.
Thanks

if you are having trouble getting in your water try room temperature or maybe some crystal light and use more water in it so its not so sweet for you...or maybe some lemon juice in the water to give it a different taste....sugar free popsicles also work...anything to get liquids in....good luck!!

ps have you tried some sugar free carnation instant breakfast in skim milk?? use some unflavored portein in it also...like i said i used the any whey protein and had no problem with it. you can get it at GNC
