Interstitial Cystitis - Oh, help!

Hi Group - 'Oh Smart Ones:

Have been recently diagnosed with IC. A painful bladder condition that's chronic with no cure. One of the things that cause it is ingesting certain acidic foods including tomato, citrus, most fruits, coffee, tea, mayonaise, salad dressings (vinegar), alcohol beverages, etc. etc.

My question is how our WLS diet co-exists with the IC one, especially in salad dressings when citrus, vinegar is harmful to the bladder.

Getting older is certainly not for sissies.

OMG   I don't have answers for you but.... geee, what foods are left to eat?  Are there meds to help?

You are in south sound...  I'm in Puyallup...  are you near by?

Hi Millie:

Thanks for answering. I called the dietitian and she hadn't heard about the disease, but I'm going to need help figuring out what and how to eat. It's an elimination diet and I can put things back in and see how I react then go on to the next food.

I don't want to jeopardize my success with the RNY, and have to keep exercising better and more. But it is depressing and frustrating. So I'm going to concentrate on what I can eat and not what I can't.

I live in the Belfair area. How are you doing with your WLS?

Hugs,
Rudie

Hi, I too have IC.  It was far worse before my RNY - I could hardly eat anything and was running to the restroom almost every 15 min.  The pain I lived with and the constant fear of accidents.... I was not living - I was running to the rest room all the time.  I went on a diet that took soy out and a few other things that I thought were good for me were actually placing me at risk for a flare up.

My saving grace was naturopathic care.  After the surgery my diet changed and I think I may have had 1 flare up since Sept.  I can live with that.  This site http://www.orthoelmiron.com/living-with-ic/ic-diet.html
gave me a printable chart I would follow when I went shopping or out to eat.  I also took a product from my naturalpath from Vitalnurtitents called Bladder Ease.  Kava works too to calm down the jettery bladder but it is hard on your liver.

I am on Vashon - and work in Seattle.  It takes me exactly 15 min to get from work to boat by car.  I sometimes did not make it to the boat or work without a painful urge or near accident.

I feel your pain.  If you can get out of the flare up you can try your techniques to help with the next flare up.  And there will be a few - because as you wrote it's not curable.

Hang in there

PNW:

Glad to hear you have improved. The time in the bathroom is a real problem - in a public restroom others "really" have to go and from the wounds it seems my bladder holds about a teaspoon. Maybe we should start our own toilet paper company.

Thanks for the heads up about naturopathic care. The foods to avoid seem to change from site to site. I've been eating eggs, but one site says they could cause problems. I'm still not too sure on the absolute diagnosis of IC. I'm having the dreaded scope exam next month and am not looking forward to it. I have one years ago and it was exceedingly painful. Will the scope tell the tail? Or is it OK this is what I think you have? The last urine test showed "things growing in it" and I'm on antibiotics and Prosed now. Still in pain and it's been several days. When to these things kick in? I'm tired of being tired and grouchy. Fortunately I'm retired so time isn't a factor but I'm one on the super seniors on this site and want to get on with my life. I have had "bladder Infections" for years so I bet it was a mild form of IC.

Thanks for responding. All comments and good thoughts are appreciated.

Hugs,
Rudie
