I'm so sorry, Ellen.

Try to keep positive and have faith that you will get through this. We've all had our challenges.

I work in HR for a school district and we're getting ready to lay off 10% (50 teachers) as well as asking everyone to take furlough days. I hope the economy turns around soon.

Keep working your program and don't take it personally.

Eileen...I am so sorry to hear this news.  Like George said, heart dropped into my stomach when I read this.  What a rotten thing to happen.  Our daughter has experienced this several times now and she is in broadcasting in Boise only working part time with no benefits.  She is a beautiful, smart young woman of 41 and is struggling but has faith that something good will come out of it.  You are a wonderful, intelligent and beautiful lady also and I am sure things are going to work out for you although right now things are looking bleak for you and it is hard to imagine anything good.  Have faith Eileen.  Know we love you and you can come here for support any time..

A big tight HUG for you,
Sandy

hi-wow-ok- this sucks however------maybe it could actually be a good thing for you---

everyone has already said to continue to be proactive! and-while you are STILL there try not to be voiciferous about what is going on ---just keep a smile plastered on and maybe they will keep you longer.....

i took the census taker test and passed with flying colors- take it-it's free- they are paying for training and the work will be part time temporary BUT up to 40 hours per week --i am assured to be hired i think--you can take a sample test online and even print out the application-it'll run from feb to may i think.....could be worse?

i know i am not helping- ican't however i am here hugging you  -

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Eileen,

Sure am sorry to hear you got laid off. From what you said in previous posts things were not going so well for you at work and you wondered if it was you. Well this sure shows it was not you but the company having to make a financial decision. Having had this happen to me several times it is hard not to take it personally but try hard not to, cause it is not.

Now, first you have a possibility of being hired back part time which may help a bit but won't with benefits. Second, apply for unemployment benefits while you are still working if you state lets you so that check can come in quickly. Third, like someone else said get your resume updated quickly and get it out there anywhere and everywhere while you are still employed. I understand from my brother who lost his job last year that the rules for resumes have changed and it is all done on the internet with little feedback. He found that in Memphis there are established groups of folks who meet weekly to help each other find job. These groups are generally held at churches. Your states' unemployment group should know if these exist where you live. They are called work finding groups or something like that.

One last thing is from my multiple times of unemployment I can honestly say each time I have ultimately found a better place to work and could look back and be happy it happened. Hope you get to that place soon.

Eileen, I can really relate to your problem, but it will all work out. I was fired because I got sick while out for surgery and it took longer than 12 weeks for me to recover. I don't blame them, but it hurts all the same.
I always felt economy proof because I am an RN, but I am specialized in home health and I have worked 20 years at it. I am highly skilled and worst of all I am over 50. I feel the discrimination even though it is not legal, who can prove it. I cost too much. Even cutting my last pay in half I would still make more then I have been offered when I do get an offer.
The UE extension payments are only until the end of February and then the law needs to be renewed. (You get 26 wks reg UE then it goes into extension.) There is a bill introduced but held up in the house that will be exactly the same as the previous one but changes the dates to 2011, one year.  The republicans feel the need to make an example of their power at the mercy of the unemployed. This site is a good one for following the bill. It takes a little exploration to figure out how it works but it is up to date and informative.   http://www.opencongress.org    It looks like it will be passed, but the tension I feel is overwhelming.
The law puts an end date for emergency benefits so they can stop it when the time comes. Example: I applied for UE on 30 Aug 09. The current extension only covers people whose date for UE to state as Aug 17th.
Now on Feb 28th the extentions will stop and some people will have gotten 98 wks of UE and some will get 13 weeks beyond their 26 reg. So, I currently only qualify for the regular 26 weeks.  I only get 400 dollars a week, but that is better then nothing.
Now that I have given you more to worry about let me extend my sincerest condolences to you, losing a job is like losing a loved one even if you don't like the job. I am sorry for your loss and I hope you easily roll into a new job who appreciates you and your dedication.

Eileen,
So sorry to hear this.  I know you haven't been happy at work for a while but this still stinks!
Stay positive while you are there.  If they are going to hire folks back they are going to look at the ones who maintained a good attitude (easier said than done), so hold you head high and keep a smile on your beautiful face (even if you are cursing in your head but on a good face).

As others have said there is really good news in that Unemployment in most states has been extended.

Update your resume and post it on Monster.com and Hot Jobs.com.  click to box that says you are available as a consultant......who knows this could turn into a whole new career path for you in freelance work (good $$ $$).

Hang in there.  Hang tough!  You can and will survive.  I've been unemployed for a while and doing ok.

Take care!
