Happy New Year to you all! My blood test showed low/nil B-12. I've all the symptoms - low energy, no wind, fatigue etc, etc. Dr. recommended shots once a month. Have any of you experienced this? Results?

Don't know what I'd do without your input!

Hugs,
Rudie

PS Out 3 years and so happy I had WLS.

 Ohhh yes, I've experienced this....

DON'T take away my B-12 shot...  I go once a month.  and I can sure tell the difference.  I even had my Mom ask her Dr about it  and now she gets a shot as well.

it is common for us all that have had rny. I do weekly self injections of B12 plus sub-lingual daily. You can not overdose on B12. The damage that can be cause from low levels it mostly not repairable. Such as brain damage, and neurological damage. B12 damage is scary and should not be taken lightly.

But that's my opinion and mine alone or others have same opinion also....

We do our own B12 shots. Before my docs read the newer studies, we had his rx B12, but we also supplemented with vet B complex. We wanted weekly, he wanted 2 weeks.

once he read the studies, he had NO problem with giving us rx for weekly. We just do them ourselves (PCP nurse taught us) and we do IM. Makes the cost about...$20/yr each.

Now, if I was symptomatic, I'd be doing shots daily. But then, I see the worst of the worst, so I'm going to react strongly since much of the damage cannot be reversed.

I had to jump in here about the B12......it doesn't affect all ppl who have had RNY.    I started taking B12 sublingual on my own and when I had my 2 yr. checkup my levels were off the chart -- I told the Doc I was taking it and he said "STOP".  If your bloodwork indicates a need for it then by all means take the shots or use the sublingual tablets.  I believe a lot of it comes from diet -- we need to eat really healthy food.

Just my own opinion,

It's automatic when you are:
over 50
have had any kind of stomach surgery
don't eat red meat
have a genetic flaw

Any SINGLE one of those can cause low B12.

I do shots weekly, but I'm mighty picky about my lab levels. I do sublinguals (10,000) now and then, too. Yes, I said 10,000. In the past, I've done shots daily.

My doc has read the newer studies on B12, so he has no problem writing rx for weekly (THEY TAUGHT US HOW TO DO OUR OWN) but BEFORE he read the modern studies, we were buying veterinary B complex (shots) to get enough B12.

BTW, B12 deficiency can be FATAL. And that was not my defective caplock. Please chase it down

It is a real concern, you are right. I think I'm going to request another blood test soon to see how I'm doing. Also, has vitamin D been an issue? I've been taking 50,000 units per week (surgeon prescribed). There is so much to watch out for, but I am so glad I had the RNY. BTW, I'm getting more energy since the B-12 shot. Can't seem to get PCP to pay attention to the needs of RNY patients - have you heard this concern?

D, expectable, preventable. You can continue to take the Rx OR you can fix your vit D level. Which do you prefer?

There is a list of things we need to remain healthy after RNY, but you're right in that most docs do not know it. My PCP really doesn't want to be educated on vites. I've had him 10 yrs and he just waves his hand and our agreement is that I do the vites, he does the medical.

Wanna drag me to your appt?
