short bowel syndrome resolved!

Hi All-

I'm sure I've thought of writing in often, but never got as far as putting the thought into action.  OH has discontinued me so many times, I'm not sure I know even who I am.  Once more I had to come up with a new variation of my name!

Anyway, here I am once more...hopefully more regularly.  Ooo!  I flinch at that word, regularity.  Having had a distal RNY and a 100 inch bowel resection, I have spent 3 months trying a variety of foods and living in the bathroom.  Depression has overwhelmed me.  It took me 3 months to get an appointment with a gastroenterologist.  Finally!  Some hope for help!  She sent me on to a new nutritionist.  Lo and behold, we came up with a food plan that has made me feel better in the last week than the past 3 months!  So, as a vegetarian, I have the following diet: sugar-free, lactose/cassein free, gluten/wheat-free and no salad greens.  I had been trying yogurt, but hey!  it's made from milk!  Soy yogurt isn't so bad, I'm getting used to it.  Tofu is still beyond my abilkity to make friends with it, but all other soy products are okay.  Has anyone else had to end up with such a strict regimen or lives with short bowel syndrome?

In spite of all this hullabaloo with my health I've managed to get to water aerobics, yoga class, walk the dog 2 miles a day and finished a senior citizen triathlon!  Exercise and other activity is rather easy to come by, now that we've moved to AZ.  How I stayed so depressed I'll never know...unless it is connected to the need to wear Depends out of fear every day.  Yuck!

My best to you all,
Rusty

Gosh Rusty,

Why do the "powers that be" keep "un-doing you" from us? I sometimes go a week or so without posting and haven't had problems. It should be ok to post infrequently without having to come up with another alias!

So sorry to hear about your recent problems. What exactly is short bowel syndrome? I'm curious. And what did they do to you? Almost sounds like a revision to prior to WLS status? If so how does that affect you?

Wow, your dietary possibilities with really stretch your imagination. I too have tried tofu and found it very uninteresting to say the least. On a desert island with only that to eat I think I'd eat sand first! Gotta run, just wanted to say hi and don't be a stranger.

Short bowel syndrome is the official name for the condition created by the surgery I have. Pouch + common channel of 100cm.

It is considered not survivable in some books.

Good thing I never read those, huh?

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
