I have been doing something really bad, eating carbs. I know most think this is a sin, but even worse is that I can eat sugar without discomfort.
Now I was reading that if I stop eating carbs I will go through 3 days of craving and then be back to normal. Is this true? I know I need to stop this habit before it gets out of hand. If it is just a matter of three days of discomfort I can handle that, I quit smoking 5 yrs ago and if I can suffer through that I can do three days. I guess I am just making sure so I can set my goal at a reasonable 3 days and then I will be back to normal.
I feel so silly to have let this get out of hand. I was so sick all the time and carbs didn't make me feel sick in fact they made me feel better so it has been a slipper slope back to the candy bar counter. I am so mad at myself.
I can remember that when I dieted prior to surgery I would feel so sick that I would fall off the diet. I think that is why I have turned down this path.
any suggestions

I'm sorry, I don't have any advise for you, but thank you for posting. I've been considering 'trying' something sugary, like a cookie or piece of cake. I've licked icing off of my fingers after cutting a cake without any adverse reaction, but I know that was just a 'little'. I have some cookies, that I absolutely have loved in the past, left over from the baby shower. They're sort of like a nut filled strudle and I don't think they have 'alot' of sugar in them. I so want to try them, but I'm afraid that I'll find out that I can tolerate them without dumping. I really want to have the dumping syndrome when I eat sugars, so it will keep me away from them. Reading so many posts where people can eat sugars and chocolate etc scares me that I'll be able to do it and it'll get out of hand. So far I've held off and not tried anything sugary, but I don't know how long I'm going to last.
I hope you get the advise you're looking for, and can stay away from the carbs. I hope I can do the same.

Hey fiftyone52.
I'm with you and I'm understand your pain.
I'm going to challenge you right now and I'll do it with you.
Okay, we have to eat carbs but the good ones, it's brain food.
No sugary sweets for the rest of this month...we can do this....I ate Halloween candy damn it and I didn't get sick. I'm further out and I have to really work at keeping this weight off.
So we are in the same boat.
I don't advocate the 5 day pouch test...it's a fad. You can't eat that way for the rest of your life and really it doesn't "reset the pouch".
It's okay to do liquids but once you stop...ooops weight gain!
What is better for us is:
Eat dense protein like chicken, fish, shrimp, steak then fresh veggies and don't drink with your meals ever. That's one rule not to be broken.
Sometimes a protein shake is okay for breakfast but wouldn't you rather eat your calories than drink them? Okay, I do have a thin friend who drinks Atkins for BOTH breakfast and lunch while she is at work. She's a tiny thing but says she eats a normal supper. She doesn't exercise. This is how she eats/drinks every day at work. She's a size 2/4 and is a little older than me. She really is dedicated...BUT I would rather eat than drink.
This really is for lifetime. It's really about lifestyle change.
I have failed at my past weight loss attempts. What is going to keep me at my present weight??? I've never been normal size before....
Yes, it's hard work. I like being a size 6/8...but you know what? My size 6 pants are getting a little snug! Am I having bounce back at 21/2 plus years out???? It scares me to pieces. I like being this size, my back and knees feel so much better.
I will remain humbled.
I'm apprehensive about going on my cruise from Nov. 20-29th...being surrounded by food. Alcohol is not a problem for me, I'm not a big drinker, never was.
If you are still reading this...
I made a promise to myself to exercise everyday. I will go down to the dining area and be served my portions. I will ask them to serve me 1/4 size portions. I will order shrimp ****tail before I eat my meal. I will go dancing every night for extra exercise...I love to dance!
I will reach for my mate instead of my plate...no midnight buffets for me! LOL

DebbieJean- Your on:
OK you talked me into it. I also see the 5 day pouch test is more like a punishment rather then a positive reinforcement. To get back to my pouch, how silly is that, I never noticed the pouch in the first place.
I do measure and weight everything I eat, I have for years before surgery so this is a habit, keeping a journal is a habit also. So I have these things going for me. I am a grazer, always have been. It is this bad habit that is my biggest down fall because I find I have something sweet in my mouth without even thinking about it before hand.
It is because of my food journal that I can see what I am doing. I also can see I have increased the simple carbs.
So, for the rest of this month I will eat only complex carbs, after I have eaten my protein and vegetables if I still need something to eat. If I make an error ( eat sugar) I will report myself to you as soon as possible and take a 'point'. You do the same to me and at the end of the month the one with the least points wins. Nothing really just the right to say they won the contest. What do you think?

Okay you are on my friend!!!
Any one else want to join in the fun that wants to get back on track and detox themselves the correct way...????
Now...I know I'm going to lose this challenge but it will keep me honest on my cruise. I will opt for a dessert once in awhile on the cruise, they do have sugar free options.
Dang...I don't want my size 6 pants getting any snugger!!
Fresh fruit options here I come...Halloween candy is kicked out the door!
Good for you journeying...you figured out the carb monster sneaked back into your life.

Have you tried the 5 day pouch test? do you really know what it is all about? it is not a fad.
I for one will never be able to eat enough foods to get my min about of nutrition in. I had RNY which means I don't absorb all the stuff I need too. Even with supplementing it's hard.
The magic number is 3. when you are 3 years out your going to be fighting like hell to stay healthy. Please re-read the 5 day pouch test with open mind. It's not what you think it is.

Yes Darlene, I have read the 5 day pouch test.
I am a revision. I do have RNY now. I had my stomach stapled in 1980. I was a guinea pig. They did studies on us.
By the way, I do fight to keep my weight OFF.
I exercise everyday. Sometimes 2 hours a day. I lost slower than most RNY'ers. I do not have a "virgin gut". I have to be very careful. I was open RNY. I had lots of scar tissue and adhesion's and was under for quiet a while. Luckily for now I don't have complications except for reactive hypoglycemia.
So yes, I been around for a long time. Researched. I still contend the 5 day pouch test is a fad/diet. Taking weight off slowly is recommended. Slow and easy wins the race.
For people that want to try it, go ahead. But for me I prefer to eat my calories, not drink them. For people to get "reacquainted" with their pouch and need liquids to "shrink their pouch" or "reset the pouch" that's fine. For me reaching for protein first then fresh veggies/fruits and exercise is what works for me. What works for me may not work for you. Nuff said!
There's a fine line with transfer eating addictions. To get a high from losing the weight and fast is not good. Many people who have had WLS that just stick to liquids because of the attitude of "I need to lose all this weight in 6 months or one year" ....well it's a fine line we walk. We all struggle in so many ways.
So what works for me, might not work for you. For me the 5 day pouch test is just ...well not for me.
