Hi everyone, I'm new to the site, but I have been gathering a world of information here. I also have just gotten my surgery date. Nov 9th in Ocala,Fl. I am excited, scared and nerous all wrapped in one. Am I too old at 62? I'm about 2 hr away from the doctor, is that too far if there is a problem? Will I be able to stand having a feeding tube in for 6 weeks. How much pain will I have, when will I be able to drive (after all Black Friday is just around the corner : o ) .....) the questions just go on and on. But I am finding what I read here to be very comforting. Thank you all   Carol

Hi, Carol and welcome to OFF. We are a great group..the best that OH has to offer if you ask me. This is the place to have questions..we have so many knowledgeable people here.

It is normal to be nervous and excited. You are going to be having a major life change and who wouldn't be nervous about that. And excited...so much to be excited about. Your life is going to change so much and trust me...you will love each and every minute of it!

You are never to old for a life change that is going to better you and your health. My only regret was that I didn't have it sooner but when someone told me that it happened when it was suppose to I knew they were right.

I can't answer your question on a feeding tube since I didn't have one. You will amazed what you can get through when you know that there is an end to it. And there will be an end to it. If you are like me you can get through anything doing it one day at a time. Those 6 weeks will go by quick...time always flies when you get older..or at least they do to me.

As for pain. I didn't have a lot of it. I had my rny open and it was the first time I had staples too. I was nervous about that too but you will probably have a morphine pump and don't be afraid to use it. Make sure that you stay on top of the pain..don't wait until you have it. It is easier to take care of it before you get it.

I could drive when I was no longer on pain medication. I didn't take any when I got home so I could have drove sooner than I did. I waited until my staples were out and then I drove with my hubby in the car just in case I had a problem. I didn't have any at all. I know just what you mean about the  Black Friday being around the corner. Just what I mean about time flying by so fast.
Welcome to our little corner of the world again and post often so we can get to know you. Feel free to join in our daily what's new thread. Just get your favorite cuppa and a cozy chair and come chat with us.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Welcome to OFF, Carol. It's a great place to be. And congrats on your surgery date. There are people here who are older than you are and had surgery. As for having a feeding tube for six weeks, I have never heard of that. Is there some reason you have to have that?

I was in the hospital for two days post-op. I would have been out after a day but had a "heart glitch", so I stayed an extra day just to be sure I was OK. Turned out to be nothing; probably was low potassium, which it turns out I still have problems with. My doctors allowed most of their patients to leave after one day as long as they could keep down liquids (water) and the lovely Sugar Free Instant Breakfast they served at our hospital post-op. I had no problems; I took off three weeks from work; I had one post-op infection in an incision and the antibiotics made me sick (the week I went back to work, no less). I am five years out and have lost 180 pounds.

I was able to drive after about a week. There was some pain and some fatigue ... mostly fatigue because this is still major surgery and your body needs time to recover.

Any other questions, let us know. We're here to help.

Aloha Carol...and welcome to the OFF! There is NOT a better place to go through WLS than right here.

I have never heard of a feeding tube for a bariatric procedure......and I've known a lot of WLS people! My surgery was just five pukas (holes) in my belly and five bandaids which fell off in their own good times in the shower,

The first few weeks was a lot of jello, pudding, cream of chicken/mushroom soup and lots of WATER and sugarfree popsicles! I used to make the chicken/mushroom soup and freeze it in ice cube trays, then put them into a plastic bag in the freezer and take our two or three for a meal. Oh, yes...and LOTS of protein shakes!

I would sure be interested in knowing why you need a feeding tube.

Good luck to you! You will do great and then begin a whole new life.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

Carol,

Congratulations on getting your date!  How exciting!  Everything you are feeling is completely normal, but it will be one of the BEST decisions you'll ever make.

Not sure about the feeding tube.  I didn't have one.

Good luck!

Debbie

welcome a-board

why the feeding tube??????????

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.
