Ironing
My neighbor Veronica Sans (she's now deceased) used a mangle. She took care of us at lunchtime because we lived too close to school and couldn't stay at school for lunch, so we went to Miss Sans' house (Mom wouldn't let us call her Veronica). So she fed my brother and I lunch through grade school and then we'd play games until it was time to go back to school. We used to make fun of her "mangle". She was such a sweetie, though. She had a collection of salt and pepper shakers. She died when I was in college when a hernia became strangulated.
one of our neighbors had a mangle-and 8 kids! her hubby was a doctor so i figured it was something hoity toity folk had!! never saw her use it tho--her daughter was a good friend in my childhood-they weren't hoity toity ppl!
I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Ladies, ladies, I STILL love to iron! Even in this day of no-iron fabrics, I just feel better if my cotton shirts and skirts are ironed! Right now I am doing clothes and have the ironing board up in the living room ready to go.
I don't iron sheets or towels or anything else like that, but my cotton shirts and my husbands dress shirts get ironed.
There's something peaceful about it. You can immediately see the results of your hard work. I didn't have time to iron when I was on the dairy farm and the cows didn't care if you had a creased shirt or not (you still got pooped on).
Now, I love it and do it again. (and I'm no longer getting pooped on!)

Candy,
I'm gonna be honest...I hate to iron! LOL
I have a steamer when my clothes get wrinkled.
No happy memories when I had to iron. My happy memories are playing outside, hide and go seek, red rover, kick the can. I liked being outside playing.
I would polish my dad's shoes as a little kid. Thought that was cool.

Oh yes, Oh yes.... I remember.
The mangle was something we wished we had..
Remember the metal pant leg stretchers? Adjusted to the size of the pant leg? Hung to dry then ironed?
We didn't iron sheets because they were stretched before and while hanging them on the line.. inside as well as outside. The wrinkles were stretched out before drying so all we had to do is neatly fold them.
Also, there was HE double LL to pay if mom found out we sprinkled our clothes, rolled them up then forgot to iron them and they began to smell....
Machines have made our life so much easier but I still miss the fresh air smell of the clothes, especially the sheets.
What a fun memory subject.

My Mom would sprinkle the shirts and roll them up and put them in a plastic bag in the fridge. Then would take them out one by one and iron them.
I confess, I don't iron that often but still can remember the nice creases it makes and the nice smell on ironing day from my mom's ironing.

What memories! I didn't have to iron sheets but did all my Dad's work khakis and Mother's work dresses and suits. Mother would stach Dad's khakis on the stove, roll them up and put them in the freezer. The next Sat. I would set up the ironing board in from of the TV and iron as I watched Sky King, Sea Hunt, Flicka, etc. We tried the metal pants stretchers but Dad preferred his pants ironed so we quit doing that. Although I do still use them for DH's jeans.
I still have our old sprinkle cap on the original Coke bottle and still use it! Today about the only clothing I iron is our shirts. But I get alot of pleasure from starching and ironing the fabric I use in my quilts and clothes I make.
