Weight and Skin

All of you may think this is a crazy question, but I'm going to be 52 next month and will also be having gastric bypass.  I know it's harder to loose weight as you get older and the skin just doesn't do what it use to.  With your weight loss experience, has either of these been a big problem?

I had gastric bypass at 68 1/2 and yes I have lots of "hanging" skin.  I also have had a difficult time losing the rest of the wt. I want to take off.   Doc thinks I may be where my body wants to be, but I'd really like to get 50 more lbs off...  I know it can be done, but I'm afraid it's going to be a tough and long process.  I've lost 102 lbs from highest wt but I'm only 5'3" and still weight over 200 lbs.   My goal is to at least get below 200 and I will make that goal someday.

Unfortunately as we age, the skin loses it's elasticity so no amount of exercise will bring it back.    I'm not into plastics, but will have a tummy tuck one day.....the rest will just have to hang......LOL

Good luck on your journey.

Charlene,
I had WLS at age 59 , 2 1/2 years ago and have lost 207 pounds. The weight came off in a random pattern, not terribly fast and not without a concentrated effort.

Some skin is baggy and wrinkled. most can be hidden with clothes. There will not be plastics in my future.

The best part is being off 10 meds and having the energy to move. That's worth each wrinkle.

Good luck

I had weight loss surgery at 55. I lost over 300 pounds,I have hanging skin,it can not be seen unless I put on a bathing suit or wear a very short sleeved shirt.
I still have some medical problems, but I am no longer a diabetic, and hardly any high blood pressure,I used to take 4 pills a day just for that. I used to take 120 mgs of predisone a day,now mostly I take 10 mg,or none.
I can now have knee surgery which I needed almost 20 years ago,all of my medical problems are not gone, but have 1/4th of what I used to have. Over 40 years of abusing my body is not going to disappear.
I will take the hanging skin anyday. The only surgery I would have is what is necessary,I would not take plastics for looks.
I am happy,I will take my hanging skin over who I was anyday.
Good luck to you.

Charlene,
I'm glad you asked this question.  I'm going to be 58 in August and am waiting for my date for rny.  I really hadn't worried about the saggy skin, because I have an apron right now that I can tuck with help.  I did wonder if it would be harder for me to lose the weight because of age, and I'm considered a light weight.  My BMI is under 40 but I have co-morbidities.  I'm hoping to go off many of my meds, bp, cholesterol, acid reflux, insulin, heart meds and who knows what else.  I just want to be healthy and know this tool will help me be so.

Charlene,

I had WLS (RNY) at 52. I am 55 almost 56 now and I have lost 140 lbs.  The weight came off slowly but that was a good thing.   As far as the skin goes....it all depends on genetics....how long you have been obese.....if you exercise during weight loss and how stretched out your skin is.    As for mine.....my pannus ( apron stomach ) hung to my knees.    I could pull it out about 1' from my body.    I couldn't keep it hid with shapewear.    I had a LBL ( lower body lift ) I have a incission that goes all the way around and everything was lifted.   They removed almost 14 lbs of skin.     If you want to see the photos become my friend and you can view them.   It was NOT covered by my insurance.   I do know others that have lost more weight than I did and are smaller than I am now without as much skin as I had.    I am still not perfect...but so much better than before and I don't have a hanging pannus now.    Good luck with your surgery !!!

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

Yes, you will get saggy skin.  We all do, unless you are younger and invery good shape.  And work every day from the beginning to tone yourself.  And even then it might not work.

My wife was thinking about plastics and our primary care physician told her he was going to talk to the surgeon to make sure he answers her the same way.  "Did you have the surgery to look good in a bathing suit or to be healthy enough to be around to enjoy your grandchildren."  She got ticked off at him and asked him why he is always so logical.

Charlene,

Had my RNY for my 60th birthday present and a lower body lift for my 64th.  I weighed 282 at my heaviest...gotten down to 152 for 2 1/2 years and gained to 160...had my LBL, they took off 16 lbs and I'm 'down' to 152 again... guess my body likes that weight.  Anyway, I went to the medical school and self-paid for mine LBL, would do it again in a heartbeat...saggy skin?  Yep, you'll probably have some... you may not have as much.... but what you gain from the surgery is much more than the plastics that follow.  I had mine to get rid of the sharpei butt and the panni... but now that I've 'painted the living room', I need to paint the hall, the bathroom, the kitchen.... my arms, my thighs, my face...:)
