Good morning everyone,

I haven't been here in a while.  We've been trying to get our yard in order, I've been focusing on my piano lessons, and time gets away from me.  I hope everyone is doing good and feeling even better - lol

Thought I would post this in case anyone is interested. My daughter will be participating in an overnight walk (18 miles) to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. All donations go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which puts the money toward research in depression and other disorders related to suicide and effective treatment programs, as well as the distribution of materials intended to educate the public about the prevalence of suicide and mental illness in an effort to de-stigmatize it and encourage sufferers to seek help.

Thank you for taking the time to read and possibly make a donation.

Aloha Rosey.....What a wonderful thing your daughter is doing. These days, funds for such things are drying up, and it makes me so sad....this is JUST the exact time we need more suicide prevention focus.

Years ago, I was director of a suicide crisis line in Santa Cruz, Ca. You would not believe how often the phone rang...it was endless!! We had a staff of 10 and the phones were always busy. One of my calls was from a woman who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge, and lived. She was in a wheelchair and you can imagine the pain she was in...emotionally AND physically. Many calls were from people contemplating homicide and then their own suicide. I could only do the job for three years....it got to be too heavy.....too many sad people I took home in my heart every day. Please tell your daughter that she has a fan in Hawaii!!

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful thing that is happening.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

Aloha Karen,

I will pass your message along to my daughter.  What a lovely thing for you to do.  I can imagine hearing so many cries for help would make your heart heavy.  There are so many people who hurt emotionally...I wish more people would reach out for help.

Thanks for answering.

I donate in my area for this cause.
I worked in an oral facial rehab unit where we tried to give people back some dignity with oral and facial reconstructure after failed suicide attempts. I could only do it for a couple of years, I know what we would do to make the prosthesis affordable, but a better solution of course is never having the attempt at all.
Tell you daughter it is a wonderful cause, the stats are scarey on this one.

Ann,

Yes, it is a very worthy cause.  One that needs more attention.  Mental illness can be devastating.  Unfortunately, it carries a stigma along with it, so people don't seek out and get the help they need.  Thank you for posting.  Have a nice day.
