Hi Everyone,
I just got my insurance approval (RNY) and surgery date (April 16th), which happens to be the day after my birthday!! I am so EXCITED, NERVOUS and SCARED!! I 'm hoping that my emotions are the norm. My surgery will be at Howard University Hospital with Dr. Terrence Fullum. I am so looking forward to this. Are there any tips that anyone can share that I should know. Thanks.

Congrats Diane & being nervous is natural. Do what your Doc tells you to do pre-op &
you should be just fine. You will be on the losing side & enjoying the ride very soon.
Take care. The quicker you get up & start walking the halls, the sooner they will let you
go home. It also help with the air builup during surgery. Are you having the RNY or
Band? Either way you will be sore for a few days then you will start getting & feeling better.
Best of Luck!!

Thanks for the tips Marilyn. I'm having the Lap RNY and from speaking to others they've said that it's easier than a c-section, of which I've had three. But we'll see. Thanks.

When you go to the hospital remember to bring flip-flops for the shower, and a pillow for the ride home for your stomach. And a tube of Chap stick for your lips.. Make sure you bring something lose to wear home from the hospital. Congrats on your approval.. Take care

Congrats! A rebirthday after your real birthday. How great is that!

A lot of hospitals will force you to get up and walk every two hours, so unless you like walking the halls in the hospital robes, bring your own robe and slippers or sandals, something you're comfortable in.

Most hospitals will provide you with everything you need, but if you're fussy about shampoo, soap, etc., you can bring your own (I did); some people might tell you to bring along a pillow to use for getting in and out of the car on the way home (great in case you have open surgery or any issues ... I didn't notice it so much with lap rny). But I brought a pillow anyway because hospital pillows are pretty flat and I'm fussy about that, too.

Pretty soon you'll be on the losers' bench!

Hi Eileen,
I'm looking forward to being on the losers bench. It is one bench that has a lot of GOOD LOSERS and I hope to be sitting there soon. Thanks.

Congratulations, Diana, what a great birthday present!
I can't offer any tips, since I am also anticipating the big day (May 14 for me), but will certainly be thinking good thoughts for you on the 16th.
Our emotions must be running along the same paths, though. I haven't felt the nervousness yet, but that will come as the date gets closer.
I went shopping tonight and stocked up on Crystal Lite, Sugar-Free Jello and Pudding mixes and broth. I already have protein powder.
EXCITED FOR YOU!

Hi Natalie,
Great,  your day will be here soon too!  I will go shopping tomorrow to stock up on all those things you bought tonight. It seems to me that all the GOOD LOSERS were also an emotional bundle prior to they're surgeries. So I guess we are on the right path. See you on the LOSERS BENCH. Take care.

Diana, congratulations on the date of your new and exciting life. You will be in for one ride of a lifetime so be prepared. It might be wild but it is going to be the most fun ride you will ever be on.

The hospital will pretty much have what you need. I didn't have to take a pillow since the hospital I went to makes special ones for surgery patients. It helped but I would rather just hold my stomach since the pillow seemed to be to hard and fat to me.

Don't forget to take the chap stick because for sure you are going to need it. I still need it and have it stashed all over the house and in my purse too. My lips get very dry and that helps a lot. Take reading material if you like to read.

It is alright to be scared since you are going into uncharted waters for yourself. You would be nuts if you weren't scared. Just relax and know that before you know it you will be on the losers bench with the rest of us. It really is a comfortable bench and the seats fits just oh so good. If you have any questions just know that we are here for answers and for a shoulder to lean on too.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.
