Update on MIL and her B-12 issues

Hey everyone,

I posted a few months ago that my mother in law's apparent Alzheimer's was actually caused by a severe and prolonged B-12 deficiency. She has had all of the symptoms of Alzheimer's; psychosis, memory loss, wandering, etc.  It's all so sad, and something that I asked the two sisters to look into more than two years ago. I had my suspicions, but heck, what do I know???
The younger daughter(Laura) took Rose's car away from her at the doctor's orders and has been making the payments for Rose. Rose wants her car back, and has threatened to go buy a new one. Yesterday Rose walked for over 4 hours to Laura's house and took her car back. It's only about 4 miles from her apartment to Laura's house, so no telling how many wrong turns and wandering she did before she got to the house. No one was home, but her car was in the driveway, so she took it.  Of course, the family thought it had been stolen.
Laura took her to another doctor and now we find out that the dim wit PCP she has been seeing all these years has NEVER taken a B-12 level (it was the neurologist who discovered the deficiency) and has only been giving her MONTHLY injections!

My opinion?  I think this PCP is neglegent, and this needs to be looked into. Up until 18 months ago, Rose was capable of traveling and living on her own. She's only 76 years old.

Very sad.  Please take your B-12!!!!

Hi All,
I just go to the Dr. Office and get my b-12 shot every 2 weeks. 1.80 is all I pay for the shot and the insurance pays the rest. So my cost a year is about 38.00 dollars.
Thanks for the heads up. Susan.

I know my bariatric doc checks so many vitamin/mineral levels at our yearly visit (it was how I discovered I was iron deficient three years ago ... when I read up on symptoms, headaches was one of them, and I was having a lot of headaches at the time).

I take a 500 mg B-12 daily even though I've never been found to be deficient ... figured it couldn't hurt. I'm spacy enough as it is, so I can use some extra focus. It's also good for the nervous system, and I have some neuropathy in my feet due to the degenerative disc disease in my back.
