Hey everyone,

I'm compiling a list of WLS Top Ten. The 10 most important rules for us to follow. There is a 10 commandments of WLS here on OH and a couple other places, but I'd like to see what you all have to say. I'm going to put this together to hand out to the pre-ops at my support group meeting next week. I think it's important that they have the rules from the perspective of folks who have BEEN there, not just what the doctors say. They may know a lot, but they don't live it daily like we do.

So......can you give me, in no particular order of importance, YOUR most important rules for living after WLS. When I get it all together, I'll post it for all to share.

P. S.
As a visual demonstration I'm taking two plastic Easter eggs to the meeting. The small ones are the size of a pouch immediately post-op. The bottom half of it holds exactly 1 oz. The larger eggs are about the size of your pouch at around 6 months and holds about 2 oz. Great visual...really gives a person an idea of just how small your new tool really is. If you get a chance to take a look at one, do so.

Hi Susan....

My #1 rule is to follow my doctors plan.

Get in the required protein and water.

Take my vitamins and calcium EVERYDAY.

Exercise at least 3 times a week.

I am sure you have all these already...just putting in my 2 cents worth. LOL

Hugs....connie d

Hey Connie,
I agree, #1 is to FOLLOW THE RULES! But, isn't that just the way life is?  Follow the rules and you'll be alright.

Thanks!

Hi Susan, my rules are as follows:
1. Never drink with meals
2. Drink at least 64 oz. of water daily
3. Take vitamins every day
4. Excercise for at least one hour daily (treat this as your JOB!!)
5. Protien first always, then fresh veggies and fruits
6. Must wait to drink now (2 yrs. post op) for one hour after eating
7. Wake up every morning, decide to be positive always, put a smile on your face
8. It's okay to have treats, sit down and really savor the taste
9. If you are emotional eating and yes we have those days...I follow the "3 Bite Rule"...3 bites and my tastebuds have been satisfied, push the rest away and tell yourself "I'm done"
10. This is not a diet but a lifestyle change, I've embrace this new concept in my life, exercise is a must, no excuses, I treat this as my job...it has to be done to maintain this lifestyle change. WLS surgery is not the "magic bullet" but lifestyle change and exercise is.

Hmmmm, one of the things I wish I had kept to from the beginning. I was fine leaving sweets alone until the surgery last year when the doctor "revised" part of my rny. He came into recovery and declared "well, if you dumped before, you won't now". Damn.  At least before that I didn't know if I did or not, so I wouldn't test those waters.

Good advice!

Hi Susan!

Our very own Jean M. posts a lot on the lapband forum.  She came up with rules for every day of the month and I believe that a lot of them will apply to RNYers, too.  I would suggest that you contact her and ask for her to email you the rules that she posted.

Great idea with the visual...

Good Morning Susan,

It's important to read every label.

The second you start to feel full, push the plate away.

Exercise - exercise - exercise!

Go to support groups, visit message boards, they keep you motivated.

Water - water - water!

Pay attention to portion size.

Aim for a good blend of protein, carbs, & fat for every meal.

Eat slowly.

  - Elaine

All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press
on to your destination.
