Osteoarthritis treatment after WLS?

If we can't take NSAID's after WLS, what CAN we take for osteoarthritis pain?

My PCP keeps wanting to give me cortisone shots in my bad hip, but you can only tolerate so many of those before they do you more damage than good.

I will ask my bariatric surgeon about this when I see him next week, but in the meantime wondered if any of you have found an effective treatment.  I'm writing this post at 1:22 a.m. because the pain is keeping me awake.  Again.

Thanks,
Jean

I take Mobic, it is an NSAID but it is supposed to be gentler than others. It was OK with lap band doctor because I take the liquid form.  However, the liquid is very expensive fortunately, my insurance covers it.  The generic pills are much cheaper and they are small.  Good luck

Jean...I have been having horrible Arthritis and Fibromyalgia pain as well.

The only thing my doctor will allow is Extra Strength Tylenol. When the pain is worse I take Vicodin and/or Flexaril
. Both of which are narcotics so I don't use them very often.

Hope you can find something to help.

Hugs...connie d

Jan,

My surgeon told me not to take NSAID's because they can be a gastric irritant.

I have the same issues: arthritic knees and back (and now elbow too). I get shots in my back three times a year (cortisone, ant-inflammatories and painkillers) that help, have replaced one knee twice (first time didn't work), plus I have fibromyalgia. The only thing that works for me is vicodin. I take it at night only, which is my worst time. Or if I really am hurting, sometimes I have to take an ultram, also a narcotic, but less sedating than vicodin. Tylenol does nothing for my pain. Ice helps sometimes, heat helps sometimes; IcyHot PM lotion helps at night; I've found this BioFreeze stuff that helps a lot. You do what you can, but the NSAIDs weren't doing a lot for me pre-op anyway. My one ortho doc got me on Celebrex for a month for inflammation of my patellar tendon, but it really didn't work and it was expensive.

I have had osterarthritis for many years.  I was allowed mobic.  I also took prilosec to prevent any possibiliy of stomach irritation.  However the mobic is pretty gentle.  Since I now have a blood clot and have to trake coumadin I am no longer able to take the mobic.  I take a pain pill ( tramadol) to control the pain but it is not an inflammatory so it only helps with pain.  It is non habit forming so I am comfortable taking it.  Hope you find something that helps you.

Ok ladies, I was never told not to take nsaids after my rny.  What is the reason for it? I have been prescribed Mobic but don't take it on a regular basis. I also take plavix which isn't a blood thinner but it inhibits the clotting process and it can have some gastic side effects, but again none of my doctors have mentioned anything in relation to the gastric bypass. Can any of you give me more information about this?

Barbara,

I can't speak to the RNY side of it, but my bariatric surgeon told me not to take NSAIDs because they can be a gastric irritant.  I have a friend who developed bleeding peptic ulcers after taking an NSAID (for arthritis) for a few years.
