Also new to this forum
Hi All,
I am also new to this forum. I have been watching the regular board and then someone mentioned there was an over 50 forum and I was so excited. I am 56 and not yet had my surgery. It is scheduled for June 8th.
I have 2 beautiful daughters and 2 even more beautiful grandchildren. I am on this journey because I want to be able to be in their lives more. I want to be able to run after them, go on rides with them and never have to hear some little kid whisper to my grandson "your grandmother is so fat". It's heartbreaking to see the look on his face when someone says that.
I was very undecided on which surgery I wanted in the beginning. I was leaning towards the band because I felt it was less invasive. But after meeting with my surgeon she said you have to work VERY hard at losing weight with the band. She said if you are not likely to exercise or be careful of sweets, the band is not for you. Well, I am certainly not an exercise freak and I do love my sweets.
I was wondering if anyone out there was tossed up in the beginning and how you finally made the decision to go with the RNY.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Welcome Mary!
I was 54 when I was banded and consider it the best thing I have ever done for myself.
I too have 2 daughters and 2 beautiful grandchildren - Steele is 7 and Mattie is 2 - and we are expecting another one in October but don't know which one will end up getting the upper hand!
I knew all along I wanted the band and have not regretted it - sure I could've lost faster and maybe been at 100 pounds by now but I am loving my new energy and can't imagine things being better. Life is so good!

Hi Mary, welcome to the best forum in the world!!
I chose RNY because of the amount of weight I had to lose.
Mentally,I wanted to be "fixed",
It may sound funny, and I mean no offense, but for me,I did not want to keep going to a doctor for a refill.
I know people here who do great with the lap band. I liked sweets too,now I can not tolerate them, even if the "sugar free" drink tastes too sweet,I can not handle it.
I do not know how much you plan to lose, and I think that is a factor. My step daughter has lost 50 pounds in 7 months, she still needs to lose about 100.I needed more than that. My daughter has lost 150 and is at goal,as am I.
I know the lap band does not have the malabsorption RNY has.
I know I made the right choice for me,so you research and make the right one for you.
I have a tool that I will have the rest of my life,so it is a life change,I do not know if the lapband is forever,or if you can decide not to do it anymore.
Good luck and please keep us posted...smile.

Hi Mary . . . and welcome to this board! I'm a newbie, too, and I'm lovin' reading the posts here.
Like you, I have two children, although sons, and two beautiful grandsons. Also like you I don't want my grandchildren to go through nasty comments made to them about my weight and I want nothing more than to get on the floor and play with them and be able to get back up! There's too much to miss if I don't take care of myself now!
For me, there was no question - it was RNY from the start. My weakness has been sweets, CHOCOLATE, anything fatty and crunchies like Doritos. I figured I needed a slap upside the head to keep me away from those delectable delights and after experiencing my first (and I pray, only) dumping by mistakenly drinking "no sugar added" hot cocoa and finding out there is a BIG difference between that and sugar free, I have NO desire to put sugar anywhere near my face.
My doctor suggested that RNY was best for me mostly because of my weight, so I was pleased. I had the surgery one week to the day before I turned 58. I thought too much time was wasting away with me not being able to do the things I want to do with my grandbabies, so RNY it was and I'm thrilled that I went that way.
You will figure out what is best for you. No matter how we get there, our goal is the same. Support is the same.
Congratulations on having a date - June 8 - yay!!!

All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press
on to your destination.

on to your destination.

Hi Mary!
Welcome to the OFF! This is a good one... you will like it here.
I went to the informational seminar wanting a band and leaving wanting the RNY. I think for me it was a combination of really wanting to get the weight off fast and it seemed like a more permanent fix... and the surgeon I chose was extremely skilled and experienced with lap RNY and after he talked about it, that more or less helped me decide to go with RNY.
From what I've heard, they are both excellent choices. It's just an individual thing.

Welcome, Mary, and we hope to see a lot of you in the coming time.
I had originally went for a lap band and the doctor told me that he thought that RNY would be the best way to go for me. I had diabetes that was out of control and he thought that I would get off insulin in 9 months with a RNY and with lap band it would take about a year and a half. Little did he know that I was going to be off oral meds 1 month before surgery and off my insulin pump 1 week before surgery.
It is a personal decision on which surgery is right for you. I went with the RNY and I have never regretted it for a minute. I, too like others, couldn't imagine myself getting fills for the band all the time. I just wanted to have the surgery and go on. But that is me and my opinion.
