here's the bad news about the newspaper
That was one of the rumors we heard about our paper ... but it's what some of our other papers in the Newhouse chain are doing. And, like I said, one of the papers in the chain in Michigan will cease to exist as a paper, only online. And others will no longer be dailies. So we are the "lucky" ones, I guess. We still have jobs. For now. If only people will advertise ...
Yes, Eileen... I read about this story and in particular about the AA paper becoming online.... and I read of it..... online....
Yes, I'm one of those new breed of news consumers that does all of my reading online. I do feel badly for anyone suffering through loss of employment, income, insurance... but I also recognize the need for a transformation of our economy and our consumption of natural resources.
I live in the beautiful pacific northwest, surrounded by forests owned by Georgia Pacific. I watch the hillsides around our valley being clear cut for the trees to make paper to make newspapers and I get very upset every time I see a log truck leaving our valley with cut trees on it that are so huge that only one or two logs will fit in the cradle..... these are clearly old growth trees, older than our country... and they are often turned into paper, for newspapers that are read once if at all then used to line someone's puppy cage....
I hope that you are able to find some way to mitigate the financial hardships you face. But I also hope that we as a people can embrace the new technology that will let our young people move ahead and survive and thrive on a planet densely populated by very old trees.
