A little overwelmed
Val
you need to make changes in your foods and exercise and just life-but--they will benefit you in the long run...
i do think it is a bit strict to say no milk=my goodness! many of us rely on milk in our protein shakes and for some of our calcium needs...
if you need to do a 3 month supervised diet-be glad--many mnay folk have to do 6 months!!!!!
stick around- ask questions-whine - cheer--
it will be worth it if this is what you want!!!
I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Hi Val,
Sorry I can't help you at this point. I'm in the very early stages. My surgical consult isn't until May. I've already started the six-month nutrition classes and have attended two WLS support groups. I'm feeling overwhelmed with it all and very undecided. That's why I'm taking this time to read, learn, and ask as many questions as I possibly can so when the time comes to make that BIG decision, I can make it with confidence that I will commit to the lifetime changes it takes to be successful.
There are so many wonderful people here. I'm sure someone will respond to your question. Good luck to you.
Debbie
The three-month supervised diet is to get your body ready for this, to see if you will be what they term "compliant" post-op. In other words, will you follow their diet? The 10-day clear liquid diet before surgery will help shrink your liver and will make it easier for the surgeon.
Yes, we all felt kinda overwhelmed at first. I didn't have to jump through these hoops. I did have to do a two-week pre-op fast on the bariatric center's supplements, and believe me, that was a little rough. Nothing but what they gave (well, we bought) you, as well as sugar-free popsicles, jello, pop, etc. But I figured it was two weeks out of my life, so I could do it. And I did. That was nearly five years ago. I am so happy I did this. It is a lot of work. If anyone tells you this is the "easy way out" ... it's not. It's major surgery. You are making a big change in your life. But it was well worth it.

I walked out of the first consult shaking in my boots. There is so much to learn and it sure feels overwhelming. It gets easier as you move along and eventually the new life style feels comfortable.
For me, the hardest part of WLS was trying to be patient and LEARNING all the necessary information. Well worth the efforts.
Take this one step at a time and ask plenty of questions right here. We will help you get through the process. Before long you will be telling about the wonderful WOW moments in your life.

Your feelings are so appropriate at this stage of your WLS story. My experience was a two year wait for surgery during which I sat by the phone and FINALLY got the call for orientation....and after that it was another year before I actually had the surgery. But during that time I learned so much that was necessary to make this understandable and thus less frightening.
The "no white food" is a good rule for life actually. Except for milk....and cottage cheese...hummm...maybe I need to rethink that rule. Protein is so important and some white foods DO have calcium and protein. Your nut will fill you in on what's what in that department. At 2.5 years out I now do eat pasta (a little, and whole grain), bread (also whole grain), but no rice. You will find your own path after you reach your goal.
Long story short.....you are embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. The joy, freedom and amazement at the end result is worth everything that you will go through to get there. You can look forward to health, fitness and freedom in your body. And we get to be your cheerleaders and that makes US feel great, too.
