I started collecting Barbie dolls at the age of 17.  The first one came out in 1959 and had a blond ponytail and wore a bathing suit.  If I remember it was black and white.  I have bought one each and every year, and also the "collector edition ones" and passed the collection onto my 16-year-old grand-daughter for her birthday this year.  I hope she holds onto them as they are in the original boxes, and they will be worth a small fortune for her.  I hope she never sells them though.  She says she is going to continue the tradition on her own now and add to it for her children that she will have someday.

my first was also 1959-the blonde in the bathing suit -which i still have --but mine had the bubble hair cut-and she was played with-a lot!!! i also have others from my youth as well as some of the clothing and accessories-nothing in mint condition tho--i played hard with them!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

You were prolly much younger then me, Margo, and thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Barbie.  I was 17 and began collecting them.  I was way past the doll stage, but facinated with them anyway.  I never opened any of them and kept them high on shelves all the while my own kids were growing up.  They loved looking at them, but understood not to touch.  I bought them plenty of Barbie's that got plenty of playtime, lots of baths and weird haircuts :) and some exist today that are missing various body parts.

I had the first one, yes, who can forget that  first pony tailed Barbie with the thick black eyeliner and the black & white strapless bathing suit that  slide off her tatas when you played to hard with her. My dog chewed her head up. Then for Christmas I got this mysterious box from "Pal" (the dog) it was a new Barbie, this one with the bubble cut. I had her and Midge until 2001 when I moved to Florida, I sold them and their clothes to a collector, and I regret it.

WOW! I remember that I had the original Barbie, Midge, Ken, Alan, Skipper, and the first Barbie Dream House ... I loved my Barbies ... I wish I had kept them. I had several Midges and Barbies (different hair colors). Mom used to make clothes for them since the Barbie outfits were expensive. I would come home from school and she would have a cute new dress made. Gosh I miss her (Mom). One time I came home and she had made Pilgrim outfits for Barbie and Ken. Tooooooooo cute!

Thanks for the MEMORY!

Sis had Chatty Cathy (her name is Kathy ... haha) Other sis had Tiny Tears (still has her). I also had Kissy doll.
