Barb,

Welcome to the OFF board, you've gotten lots of perspectives here, all I can do is reiterate what has been said, "why'd I wait so long". . .  because I was not ready before I did it and now that I have, I am grateful for all the living I can now do and I wish you well and look forward to following your progress!

Best wishes, Laureen

Barb, my wife had RNY at 50 and I had it at 56.  The only regret we have is we did not have it sooner.  I am not going to lie and say it was an easy decision.  Human nature always comes up and says why do this.  But we prayed about it and realized for the sake of our family, it was the best thing to do.  Three years ago my wife could not go to the mall without her wheelchair.  Now she gets in trouble for running in my daughter in law's house when playing with the grandkids.

You will be so relieved once it is done.  Follow the rules.  No problem.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

Barb, welcome.  I was apprehensive about my surgery as well because of my horrible lung disease (not from smoking). So, I wrote every one letters in the event that I should die and every once in a while I read them.  It is true that there are risks, but you pick your doctor like your life depends upon it and do everything he says and things go well.  I was on a ventilator right after surgery because of my lungs and while I was lying there letting the machine breathe for me, I kept thinking what if this is it, what if I cannot come off the vent or if I die or if I throw a clot but you know, I came off and came home and now I am freaking running, yeah baby and I climb stairs and I get in the floor with my grands and I can be lifted by the people in the hospital when I need to be assistance.  I can fit in the little chairs.  OH hell, you'll see.  Weigh the risk and the benefits.  Oh, and what about the mortality of obesity?  Good luck and I'm willing to bet you will be fine.

Hello, Barb and welcome to OFF. You will find much wisdom and love here. I would spend my life on here if I could but since having wls I now enjoy a life outside of my home. I love that one too.

I was 52 years old when I had my rny in October of 2007. I am now 54 years young. There is such a difference that I can't even begin to tell you about them. I am now living a life~the one that I always wished that I could. I also regretted not having the surgery sooner but know that I wasn't ready for it then. I was brought to it when I was suppose to have it and not a moment sooner. My co-morbidities were many, diabetes, back problems, heart problems, high cholesterol and triglycerides, sleep apnea, asthma and who can remember any others? These were plenty! Now the blood sugar is no longer a problem, I was off oral meds 1 month before surgery and off the insulin pump 1 week before and have nothing since. The heart problem is better. Nothing is going to take it away (cardiomyopathy and chf) but the heart is pumping so much better now. There is so much wrong with the back that nothing is going to help it but I knew that going into this. The cholesterol and triglycerides is normal now and the sleep apnea is fine along with the asthma too. I knew that I was going to die if I didn't have this wls and figured that I wasn't living anyway. I for one think that when you job here on earth is complete you go no matter when it is.

I just want to let you know that being scared is nothing to be ashamed off. We all fear the unknown. That is what is called being human. Just know that I was old before surgery and now.........well, I am awaiting the birth of my first grandchild in April and Grandma is planning on babysitting him. I know that I would never have been able to do that before surgery! I am grateful every day of my life for it.

Please post often so we can get to know you and you us. Good luck on the surgery and may you have a speedy and pain free recovery.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Barb,
I had just turned 53 when I had my surgery Jan 08. I am now down 95lbs and turned 54 in December.
You'll do fine.
My cousin's ex-wife was from Elizabeth City. I stayed there with them the whole summer back when I was in the 7th grade. It was so nice there, so laid back. Her family was so nice. I think she still lives around there.

Thank you to everyone (wow so many!) who posted. While I don't have grandkids to chase yet, I would like to be able to garden without getting short of breath, and walk the mall without my feet hurting. I think my mom understands, now if my husband would just calm down. He's more nervous than I am!.

Hope to post on Saturday,  save me a seat, and keep me in your thoughts, Thanks again for such support,

Barb

Hi Barb and welcome to OFF!!!

What you are feeling is perfectly normal. This is a major surgery and I would be worried if you weren't!

I wish you all the best....you will do just fine!

Hugs....connie d
