NYC GTG questions

I have questions about the proposed NYC GTG in October.  Mostly for Laureen, but I know the answers will help everyone.

Definite date yet?  I'm hearing (reading) the second weekend in October.  Is that close?

Which airport would we fly into?  You big city people have two.  Three if you count Newark (if that's even close...my geography is pretty limited).

What about the train?  I know about Grand Central Station, but not if I could get there from here.  It might be a nice change from a plane, and I've never "ridden the rails".  Maybe we could slow down in Ithaca, and Annette could jump on.  Can't do that with a plane, unfortunately.  It's sort of a big jump...

Would it be stupid to drive there from Western NY, considering mileage, time, and driving in the city, not to mention parking fees?

Yes, I want to come.  Just trying to get all my ducks in a row, to see if I can.

Hi Candy,

To answer your questions. . .

The date I believe works best is Oct. 15 to 18. . .

I would say as far as airports go, they are all pretty much the same distance from NYC (LGA, EWR & JFK) and you can get public transportation from all into the City, though LGA would be a bus to a train kind of thing, whereas Newark has a train that runs into Penn Station New York, which based on my current research of hotels, the one where I have a sort of in with the manager, has given me the best price for staying in the City itself ($189 per night, plus tax, which for 3 nights, if split 3 ways would work out to approx. $200 pp, considering Manhattan, a bargain), but I do want to check it out first hand and make sure it is safe for all, and so on, is just about two or three blocks from the hotel.

Do you have easy access to Amtrak, because that comes into Penn Station and that could work well for anyone wanting to ride the rails.  The drive, well as you are well aware, parking in NYC is at a premium, so it could be pretty expensive to do that, but if you shared a ride with some of the other travelers from your region, it might be ok 3 ways, and I will see if the hotel has any kind of discount parking, which would help if you wanted to drive.

Hope this answers your questions and I was actually going to put some questions out there today on this very subject of the NYC GTG.

Take care, Laureen

Candy,
Thanks for throwing those questions out there. Laureen has her act together. I'd like to consider a train too since I've never "rode the rails" either. Wonder how long it would take from Pittsburgh.
If its not too much $$ maybe you can drive to Pittsburgh and take the train with me and Lora. Just another option to confuse you even more.
Did you see my post about Lora? Yes, she finally came out of hibernation and  OMG  she looks great.

I grew up on Long Island and I just loved riding the LIRR.  Took my family on it back in 1992.  It was a great experience.  I still remember the order of the stops as the conductor called them out.
