NYC October GTG - Information and More for all Interested Parties

Hi Fall Fantastical GTGr's

Ok, I've been researching and my motel manager (Comfort Inn) came back with a best price of $189, plus tax per room rate, 3 people to a room no extra charge.  That would be probably about $225 per room, per night, which breaks down to $225 per person (for your entire 3 nights) splitting it 3 ways.  Please realize that by NYC standards that rate is very cheap.  The motel does not offer refrigerators or microwaves in the room.  I could bring a couple of coolers if we wanted to keep water on hand and some simple snacks.

I realize this is not a cheap trip for anyone, but the alternative (which has been brought up by a couple of folks) and to which I am open, would be you coming to my area of SWNJ, which is in close proximity to Philadelphia and perhaps make a day trip to New York City.  However, while motel costs would be much cheaper, probably about $85 a night, plus tax, possibly even cheaper, we would need vehicles to get us around and if making a trip to Manhattan, the train station is 35 miles from where I live and the roundtrip train ride into Manhattan is $25 pp and would mean one day to explore the city, whereas, spending the $225 to stay in the City gives us the opportunity to socialize and enjoy one of the biggest City's in the world and transportation once there is plentiful and easy to navigate, I think an unlimited day metrocard is $7.

I really believe that most of the people coming are interested in the Big City experience, which is part of why, while I live in SWNJ, I thought it would be nice to have this GTG in Manhattan and why I am posting so early as to allow people to get a realistic idea of the costs associated with the trip.  If you are planning on flying in, there are 3 airports to chose to fly into (EWR, JFK & LGA) and all offer public transportation that would bring you into the city and very close to the motel I have an in with.  If you are driving, perhaps the best idea would be to drive to where I live and then, if possible take one car into the City, as parking is expensive in Manhattan, though I will check out to see if the motel offers any kind of discounted parking and what that would be cost wise.

This can be a once in a lifetime experience for some of you and I do know my way around the City since I lived there for 48 of my 53 years, but I want input from you all on what you think.

My intent is to ask the manager to put aside a block of rooms based on the head count I have now (which is 12 to 15 people) and as the date gets closer and we see who will actually be coming, we can then finalize those plans for the motel.

I am also going to ask, so that we can do this without polluting the board, for all interested in coming to PM me with the best way to contact you from this point forward, ie, e-mail or phone number and please provide that information.

Thanks and I am soooo excited to be doing this, though I know it might be a feat, I think I'm up for the challenge and I look forward to seeing those of you I've already had the pleasure of meeting and meeting those I have not yet met!

Hugs, Laureen

I personally do not mind you "polluting" the board.  It gives those of us unable to go a chance to share your anticipation.  I wish I could go, but in addition to financial, I do not want to get that close to my family.

george-you are so right about the anticipation! the talk leading up to these gtg's and the talk afterwards is only part of the wonder of meeting the sisters (and the brothers)--the people make the events!!!!!!!!!!!! speaking for myself; the cities we have all met in and the activities we have had were great but the socialization-the hugs and the crying and laughter, putting a face and voice to the name, intonation and caring and quirks  and just being together....

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I really have to agree with Margo.  Our day in Frankenmuth was the most fantastic time.  It gave me a chance to meet some of my OFF family and see ones I had already met.  I had talked on the phone to a couple, but meeting them was the best.  It also gave Brenda an experience to see how great OFF is.
