What's new Thursday? (I waited long enough for Eileen)
Eileen might even be sleeping tonight. What a concept!
Good morning to all you OFFers!
Don't know if I bragged about my grandson. Took first place in his school spelling bee. Now he goes to citywide spelling bee. And I think after that is national. I am not sure, but we heard there will be 275 people at national this year, so it is not one per state. Just want to see him do good, does not matter if he wins. (Sure would be nice though)
Ready for baseball season. Tuesday I will be at a luncheon that will have about 100 people invited to hear Nolan Ryan speak about the Rangers. Free meal too (season ticket holder thing).
Have a great day!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!
Thanks George. I started one too but deleted it. We must have been typing at the same moment. Good luck to your grandson
It is sure hard to keep my mouth shut and not make "suggestions" to Tom about his eating habits. I like to make larger batches of food and not worry about cooking on my late days at work. The problem is that he will eat until the food is gone. He says that is easier than putting left-overs in the fridge and it is my fault for cooking tasty meals.
He NEEDS to lose weight to get his BP down and out of the dangerous level. Game plan: cook smaller meals.
Stay warm folks.
Annette

Karen,
Good idea. This is going to be a struggle. His thought is that the only edible vegetable is the potato - 3 or 4 at a meal. From now on, I will only buy and cook one at a time.
Tom has never had to diet before. We don't have cookies or goodies in the house but he will scrounge around and fix a couple of PB & J sandwiches to eat instead of the apple slices I offer. I made a double batch of SF pudding - I had 1/2 cup, he ate the rest.

Hi Annette.
Gary is a member of OA and I need to help him with portion control or he just gets frustrated. So, I plate up the meals and then immediately put the food away. If it's to on the stove for him to go re-load, he won't go take it back out of the fridge for more.
I suppose PB&J's are a tiny bit better than cookies, but not much. How about buying double fiber bread? At least it will cut down on the total grams of carbs with all the extra fiber. OOOOOO....try cutting the apples into chunks, sprinkle with splenda and cinnamon....almost tastes like apple pie! You can even zap it for a couple of seconds to warm them.
Good luck my dear. It's a good thing we love 'em!

I find the double fiber bread to be a little dry. I don't know if H.E.B. grocery stores are located anywhere outside of Texas but I found a bread there that I like. It looks and feels, and tastes like regular white bread. It is called Glycemic Health and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels ( it says) It contains Hi-Maize a natural dietary fiber made from corn. Each serving (2 slices) has 110 calories, 23 g carb. and 4g fiber. Not as much fiber as double fiber but I like the taste better and Hi-Maize has supposedly (according to clinical studies ) been shown to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels as part of a high fiber diet. It is an HEB brand so I don't know how easy to find it is nation wide.
Annette, I'm having the same trouble with my hubby. When we eat out, he and I used to share a plate but sometimes, I don't want dense meat so I have taken to ordering a lite food or a child's meal. He eats his and mine. Plus, when we eat at home, he will eat huge portions and go back later and eat more. He has gained about thirty pounds and is having back pain and trouble breathing. I have begged him to walk with me, but he refuses. Like you, I worry about his health.

Jeannie,
When I first began changing our eating habits, Tom lost faster than I did just because of simple changes. He looks slender because he is super tall but his BP is dangerously high with a mere 12 pound weight gain. He won't walk with me either.
We all know from experience that it is impossible to force a person to eat healthy meals and exercise.
