To carb or not to carb?

What is a good number of carbs to be eating daily?  I'm regularly eating beans and protein wafers, both relatively high in carbs.  So my daily intake is about the same as my protein or about 70 grams.  I suspect this may be too many.  Any ideas?
Thanks, Carmel Valley Linda

Linda, I am not counting my carbs. I watch them but don't count them. I eat the good carbs which is the beans and the lentils and such. I stay away from the pasta and the breads (but sometimes the bread is a hard one for me~I still love it with a capital L) and stay with the carbs that are good for you. Just my own opinion and plan, so take what you like and leave the rest. Good luck on what you choose. Keep me posted on what you find out if you would please.

Looks like you aren't quite three months out of surgery.  At this point you should be eating protein first, and feeling full (okay, more like "not hungry" )after that.  I think my meals were to be only about 5 or 6 ounces at that point.  Beans have protein and complex carbs, the good ones, but the protein isn't complete.

Now for the big question, what does your doctor's office say?

Linda,

It is too early in the morning for my technical brain functions. I don't count carbs either but avoid the non-essentials such as bread, rice and pasta. It is always protein first, then fruits and veggies in small amounts.

There are some good sites to help count protein, calories and carbs. The only one that comes to mind is fitday.com but there are several others.

Linda,

My NUT told me that my carb intake should be in balance with my protein and that it should largely be made up of the good carbs found in natural fruits and vegetables, beans and such.  They would go over my food log and point out that I needed to take in more red meats (so as not to get anemia) and to avoid the bad carbs found in bleached, processed flours, sugars and startchy vegetables.  In my first year most days my carb count was in the 80 to 100 range, along with my protein, as has been said, protein first, any room leftover should be for vegetables and fruit.

Good luck, Laureen

Thanks everyone,  I always appreciate your sage advise.  I'm doing the protein first, veggies/fruit next and journaling on Fitday.  But some high protein stuff is also high in carbs, like the Bari 15 protein wafers and chili con carne.  Just wasn't sure if my carb count should be near the protein count.  I knew you wise and wonderful women would have the answers.
Gratitude and joy, CV Linda
