I'm all of a sudden having problems

I'm a little over 4 weeks out and all of a sudden can't seem to eat the same things I ate last week.  I get a feeling like the food is "stuck" in my esophagus or somewhere between my stomach and my throat.  Is this perhaps because I'm eating too fast or too much at one time?  I don't feel like it's "dumping" since it's more a too full feeling with a lot of gurgling in my throat/esophagus than anything else.

What are the "foamies"?  Perhaps that's happening?  I just don't know and would like some insight!  Thanks!

The "foamies" are foam coming up into your mouth (often followed by vomitting). I have that often (I am right now actually). I always keep a cup nearby.

You may be eating too fast or not chewing your food well enough ... or too much food at a time.

It is hard to retrain yourself in how to eat. I am 8 months out and just ate this apple too quickly and now I have the foamies.

If you feel there is a problem please call your surgeon! This is something that his office will work with you on.

I think a good rule of thumb would be to chew each thing that goes into your mouth to a count of 25 until you are sure it is well chewed before swallowing, if you aren't already doing so, put the fork or spoon down between each bite and another thing is, not sure if you are someone who feels hunger, but eat by the clock, so that you don't get too hungry, which makes us want to get the food in faster, eat something every 2 to 3 hours.  Sometimes I had that gurgling in my stomach after eating, still do sometimes. . .  Foamies are like when you haven't chewed properly and something gets stuck, or if you overeat, you get a backup of a foamie like, phlegm and usually it will come up and you have to , it can even cause your nose to suddenly start dripping, I believe it is sort of like dumping, but not a full dumping experience which can include a nauseous, dizzy, breakout in sweats and diarrhea episode that can be over quick or last a while, which I believe is usually caused by too much sugar, sugar alcohols for some and/or fat intake, which is why label reading is so important, as even medicines sometimes contain things that would make us dump. . .

My Mantra is that I do not determine my success by the number hanging in my closet, nor will I let the scale determine that success either. . .  It is through trial and error I will continue to grow and succeed. . .  Laureen

I do think I was eating too fast.  I ate the one scrambled egg in about 10 minutes.  I'm going to stick to a protein drink for snack and soup for lunch and SLOW DOWN and CHEW at dinner!  Thanks for the support and info.

Sorry to hear you're having troubles. Mu NUT told me to try to make things moist, and I find that things go down much better that way.  When I make eggbeaters I always put some salsa on top.  You might want to try doing this as it's worked for me.
Good luck.

Great advice Laureen!

Dumping is really the pits! Makes foamies look like nothing! It is an experience you will never forget! I have dumped several times and ended up in bed and it took hours to get myself pulled together. I dumped really bad on penicillin! and MSG/preservatives cause me to dump. I have to be very careful with foods and meds.

You poor thing,,I feel for ya, been there, done that.
You will find in your journey that its not uncommon to be able to eat something today, then tomorrow it wont work for you. It happens to me all the time, and Im over three eyars out.
As for dumping, everyone dumps differently. me, I get really sleepy and break out into a sweat and get the shakes, and sometimes with severe dumping I will get stomach cramps. I haven't had the "potty trots" with dumping ever, but I just tend to feel like Crud for about an hour, sometimes longer and usually have to lie down. It usually doesnt strike immediately after eating something either..it can be hours later. Sugar free ice cream put me in agony for hours and I swore never again. Some kind of sugar alcohol in it I guess.

Hope you get to feeling better. Sometimes it helps to go lie down on your left side. That was what I was told early on when I had my first few mishaps, and it really works. Dont know why,,,,

Take care!

You sure summed it up well Betsy. I am the same way. What works one day doesn't the next. My dumping is like yours and I have to go to bed until I pull out of it. But mine lasts for hours. Haven't had it happen in a while (THANK GOODNESS).

hi deb..yes it sounds like you ate to fast or didn't chew long enough...however...if it continues call your dr so he/she is aware of this problem because it might be a stricture...also like betsy mentioned laying on your LEFT side helps move the stuck food move down. also chewing a couple papaya pills will also make the food softer and it will pass through the stuck area.

the foamies are foam coming up and are uncontrolable usually followed by throwing up. can last for a few minutes to hours....hope this info has helped you and again like i mentioned...if this keeps up...CALL your dr to let them know whats happening to you.

hugs
