eating problems
I had exactly the same problem as soon as I tried adding solid protein to my diet (probably at 3 or 4 months from surgery****il about 1 year. Almost all the protein I tried to eat came back up and it lasted for several months until it finally tapered off. I still have problems with meat and eggs but not as much. When eating meat I have to eat a small amount and chew it well. After about a year I discovered I could eat many things I shouldn't have without getting sick. Like sugar, chips, etc. Be careful eating that stuff. When you can't keep anything down it's easy to grab things you know will not make you sick but those are the kinds of things that made us fat to begin with. My surgeon said when you have this surgery you lose the enzymes the stomach uses to digest certain foods. It gets better with time. I drank one or two protein shakes every day and was able to eat cheese and crackers and most soups. I still drink a protein shake several times a week. I use Unjury, either chocolate or vanilla, and mix it in my coffee with ice and add some milk or half and half to it. The Unjury tastes pretty good that way but when mixing into a drink it disolves best in luke warm or room temp liquid. You can't put it in hot or very cold liquid. I know how miserable you are but you will get past it. Good luck.

It was at least a year for me before I could eat any meat or fish, cottage cheese, salad, eggs, lots of things. I got sick on eggs just the other day, and the pork chop I cooked for myself too. But nothing compares to that friggen pint of ice cream last night. Oh just the thought of it......

It has been a while since I had surgery, but if I don't chew right, or eat a too greasy of a food, it comes right back up. I still have trouble with dense proteins and would rather eat glidder foods than the good protein. It will get better and you will learn what sits well. I lived on canned oysters for a year. I still keep them in my cabinet and when I don't want to eat a big meal, I heat them up and eat them. They have plenty of protein and are glidders for me. It will get easier. I promise.

Thanks again for everyone's replies; it makes me feel like I have a network of sisters out there! I DID have a really bad night last night, but hopefully, I am over the worst of it. I lost count of how many times I threw up all night long! I am sorry to be gross here, but I was starting to wonder where it was all coming from! I finally feel a bit better this morning, but I need to have a resting day and try to just do a lot of fluids. I lost 2 1/2 pounds in one day! And, yes, now that I think back, I have been trying to make myself tolerate things that I know would not sit well. I learned a BIG lesson, believe me! And I plan on letting my little tummy rest and get over being upset for several days before making it angry at me again! One question that I did want to ask on this subject is about my meds: I just got to the place that I am allowed to switch from the chewables, so could taking whole pills have contributed to this? Maybe I should go back to the others for a bit?
I have the same problem with pills; they eventually go down but seem to be slow. If you have to take Nexium or something similar to that, which I do, I open the capsule up and put the contents on a spoonfull of yogurt, other pills you might want to crush and have chewable vitamins and calcium. Three weeks after surgery I had a kidney infection and was put on an antibiotic, which I had to crush. Let me tell you that was the most horrible thing to get that crushed pill down but I managed with yogurt-also 3 weeks ago had a sinus infection and again the pill tasted terrible. Everyone is different in what they can tolerate--I can eat cottage cheese, crackers, fish but don't try an egg, any bread, pasta or beef. I found Pure Protein bars at Wal Mart-theyhave 18-20 grams of protein in them and don't bother my stomach, just eat them slow. I can't get the powered protein down at all, it just gags me, so these bars work good. You can buy individual bars so you might want to try a couple and see how they digest. I know during the first three weeks after surgery I was nauseated every day and felt like I could be taken out and shot but I kept telling myself, it WILL get better and it did, once the swelling went down. Just hang in there and be patient, think positive thoughts when things don't seem to go right , your reward at the end of this road is terrific. Sandra
Hello again,
Just to post an epilogue to all of this, I am, thankfully, much better today (Friday). It all started on Tuesday evening. I probably will never know if I had a flu bug, which IS going around, or an extreme reaction to eating something that I shouldn't have. But I did find out one rather disappointing thing: I was almost in a panic by last night, because I had kept nothing down for 2 whole days, and was hurting, and feeling very badly. So I called the night number for my bariatric center to get some imput from my doctor, or from whomever was on call. I actually have it in writing that after being one of their patients that I could always expect help 24/7 if something came up. (no pun intended!). I could tell when I spoke to the night call service that they had instructions not to bother the doctors unless someone was near death. I insisted that I needed to speak to the doctor, so after about an hour, the GP that I see at the center called me back.. I could hear how annoyed she was by her voice. She more or less told me to go to some ER, that she was going out of town, and she just didn't offer any advice unless it was during office hours. Well, I sure do know that I will never get help that way! Guess they got paid by my insurance, and this case is more or less closed! Was wondering if some of you others have ever had to call at night, and what kind of reception you got???
Well, bottom line, I am lots better today, and will watch what I put down there for several days, and hopefully this will just be a bad memory. Thanks to everyone that answered my inquiry, and I did learn a lot from you!
