eating problems

Hello all,

With the holidays and other things, I haven't had time to even get on here to read, let alone post anything, for a while.   At nearly 4 months out, I have a lot of days I can't eat, or drink, without it coming up.   Ironically enough, I was able to eat bad things during the holidays without much problem, but all the good stuff, protein, meats, etc, do not sit well.   I know that I am not getting in enough nutrition, let alone feeling badly a lot of the time.   I posted on the main board about this, and someone suggested that this is about the time the nerves in my tummy that were cut, start to grow back and makes this happen.

I have bought lots of stuff to try eating and my cupboards and freezer is full of various choices, and I really try to eat the things I should, but it is very hard to do.   Please tell me that this phase does not last for an indefinite amount of time.   I have lost right at 50 pounds, and I want to lose about that much more.   I am so tired of so many things coming back up, let alone how bad it is to feel like this.   It is miserable!

Hi,

Just wondering, since you stated how busy you are, are you really chewing things thoroughly and slowly?  I am not saying in any way that you aren't, but just wondering, as I, myself, oftentimes, especially when I am at a hectic pace or socializing, can get sidetracked and then, watch out, my pouch gets all prissy on me. . .  As for your fluids, sip slowly, perhaps your pouch does not like room temp or cold things, so try decafinated teas and such and sip slowly, like the first days after surgery, otherwise, I would suggest, if this continues, to contact your surgeon's office, I remember reading about people who had strictures and that caused problems.  The thing is, you chance dehyration, not to mention that our weight loss can decrease greatly without the proper amounts of protein and hydration.

Hope this is just a minor bump in your road.

Best wishes, Laureen

Hi there!
I did that too, it was a long time before I could tolerate meat, salad, eggs, and I still cant most meats and only occasionally an egg.
Heres a trick for ya though. Get some Unjury unflavored Protein,,you can get it online from Unjury.com..and sprinkle it in your flavored water, soups, cottage cheese, coffee, whatever. That way you will get the nutrition you need. Thats what I had to do. I PROMISE you cant taste it,,in anything! Its really good stuff. It comes in flavors too, and they are good, but I found the unflavored to be so handy for adding protein to everything. I add shredded cheese to lots of things too..like soups and salads.
Sounds like you are doing great otherwise, 50 pounds is something to be proud off.

Keep posting, we are here for the support! Its great to hear from ya and know you are doing well!!
Hugs

 OHhhh  Gurl,

I sure hear ya....  I've had difficulties with one thing or another.  There are times my pouch will NOT let dense foods go down.  Once in a while I can tolerate an egg. Then when I do eat meat I need to be conscientious of chewing to a pulp every time or I get sick.  Seems some foods are more easily tolerate at one time then not another.  I guess I'm going through my next adjustment now....  My blood sugar keeps dropping so I need to eat smaller meals more often... sheeshhhh

Basic Rule:  Things that are, will change.....

Hang in there....   Millie

Don't get discouraged.  I had open RNY 9/15/08 and to date have lost 72 pounds with another 48 to go, but there have been days when nothing would stay down regardless of how much I chewed it or how slow I ate.   Have you tried Louis Kemp crab meat?  I find this to be very good for protein  and it can be cut up in small pieces.    Eggs, beef and pork are not good for me, I can eat fish and shrimp though, maybe you could give them a try.    Make sure you get your vitamins and minerals in also, I sometimes  run out of time during the day to get everything in but they are very important.  Have you been back for a check-up yet?  If not, I would suggest you call your physician and discuss it with him as you could get into real trouble.   When I have problems, I eat plain saltine crackers, that seems  to settle things down.  I practically lived on them early on.  My nutritionist told me that when I introduced new food to my system, give it 3 days before I should  try something new, maybe that wil help .  Just don't get discouraged, things WILL get better.  Sandra

I dealt with the same things. I am now nearly 8 months out now and finally am able to eat much better. I have lost 117 pounds since WLS (RNY 5/13/08) and only have 7 more to lose.

Did you call your surgeon about this? Hang in there.

Thanks to everyone for your replies; it sure does make one feel like we aren't all alone in this!   And you all made some very good suggestions, which I will try.   The thing that is so odd is being able to eat some things so easily and other things are so intolerable!  And it is frequently not what one might expect.   I called my bariatric center today and my nutritionist suggested my going back to the basics for a few days and to add other things back in very slowly.   They did not seem overly concerned, so I guess this is just a part of the process for a lot of people.   Now, if I just knew what to have for supper!!!! LOL!
thanks again!

Yes my Nutrionist told me to go back to liquids for a few days and then keep trying. So I did. I was just an usual case I guess? I could eat the oddest things with no problem. Best wishes!

Hi, so I had my RNY in 2004 and have lost almost 200 lbs. I have done very well and usually do fine with eating and drinking. But even today, at breakfast I didn't chew well enough, put too much in the mouth, ate too fast, and got sick.....the foamies. I did what I call a Stupid Monica Trick. My hubbie and daughter said how could you do this to yourself and I really no answer except I forgot the rules. I use a small plate and USUALLY put my fork down b/w bites to make myself go slow. Today I didn't and paid for it. Do yourself a favor....if you haven't already, try using a site like FitDay.com. It helps you track what you are eating and is really easy to use. Also get yourself a measuring tape, don't rely on the scale to show your weight loss, it comes in inches and sometimes not pounds.
Does the food come back up or do you get the foamies? Have you seen the doctor or nutritionist about this problem? Take it slow and easy, really plan on the food you are going to eat and don't drink before or after you meals for at least 30 minutes. Good luck and be good to you.
Visit and share often. Monica
