Can I use fat free Half and Half?  I don't want to use protein powder concoctions to flavor my coffee and I can't drink it "straight".

Is it too early for me to try a protein bar?

What is your favorite or the best nutrition-wise Kashi cereal?

Does anyone have an idea for Greek yogurt that ISN'T sweet?  I'm really not into sweet stuff at all.  (I know - that makes me WAY unusual!)

I had some Nectar protein mix that I bought before my surgery and had never opened - opened it this morning (Fuzzy Navel) and mixed it with Crystal Light lemonade and it was great - I'm sorry I waited so long!  It will be an easy way to get in more protein, that's for sure.

Debbie, I only have the information that I have from my experience. I can do that much for you but it is just my own opinion.

I would say that yes it is to early for you to try protein bars. They are gassy and that might not sit to well. I was told by my pa that I should wait until about 3 months out. I still haven't found one that I really like but the pure protein in the chocolate chip or smores is the best that I found. Mostly the smores flavor.

As for the Kashi Go Lean cereal my favorite is just the plain old Kashi. It has 13 grams of protein. I like to mix it with yogurt and with cottage cheese too. I like to just measure it out and put it in a dish and eat it as a snack too. It is so good. The other kinds of Kashi has more sugar in it and so I have never tried them.

Hope this has helped a bit. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help to you. Good luck and remember you are doing great.

Thanks, Brenda!  I thought that was probably the case with the bars.

Not sure if your surgeon's office offers a nutritionist, but if it does, I would place a call to their office for some of these questions, as the place I had my surgery gives us a booklet and has a nutritionist go over the guidelines of post-WLS life. . .  but I will address things as they were outlined by my surgeon. . .

I am assuming you mean decaf, as I was not allowed any caffienated beverage before 3 months post-op and then, in very limited amounts, as coffee is a direuritic and depletes our bodies of vitamins in the process, also told that for each cup of coffee, that I need to drink and equal amount of water over the 64 ounces we are supposed to take in daily and so, I think you can use fat free half and half, I have used it from the beginning with no ill effects.

As for a protein bar, again that is something you need to ask surgeon, mine did not like me depending on them for my protein intake and told me they have are high in carbs, so watch the sugars and fats in them

If you like oatmeal, there is a good weight management oatmeal with protein in it, you can add skim milk and it gives you a good amount of protein.

I don't much care for yogurt, but those on my home board that eat the Fage yogurt, mix fresh or frozen fruit in with it, make sure it has no added sugar if using frozen.

You can also make smoothies with your protein powder, skim mil**** cubes, peanut butter, maybe some sugar free flavored syrups, don't be afraid to be creative, that is what will get you through this and keep you on track.

Good luck.  Hope some of what I said was helpful.

Laureen

Debbie,

A person in my support group uses Vanilla Low-Carb Slim Fast in her coffee instead of creamer. She said it is good. I've never tried it, ... just an idea.

Kashi Go Lean is the highest in protein as Brenda mentioned. I tried the Kashi Go Lean Crunch and couldn't keep my hands out of the box. Much too tempting and not resistable. Is that a word?

Plain Greek yogurt is similar in taste to sour cream. Could you put a dollop on an omelette and add some salsa? I don't like the taste of eggs now so this is just a brainstorm idea.

When shopping for protein bars make sure to carefully read the labels. Some are high in calories and sugar alcohol. Some folks have a bad reaction to the sugar alcohols. They are handy to keep on hand.
